Take Rt. 47 East out of Parkersburg to Nicolette Road, beside West Virginia University-Parkersburg. The cemetery is behind the lower end of the College parking lot. Ohio Valley Health Care Nursing Home sits across the road to the right.
The property was owned by the Daniel Kincheloe family in the early 1800’s. Mr. Kincheloe set aside a small ¼ acre area of land about 100 yards from the family home to be used as private family cemetery. The land changed hands, and by the early 1900’s the old farmhouse was being used as the County Infirmary. The cemetery was expanded to about 1 ½ acres in size.
The graves in the newer section are all marked with small white wooden crosses with the names and dates stenciled with black lettering. A few graves are marked with traditional markers or Military markers in addition to the white cross.
The original Kincheloe cemetery is the lower left corner of the current cemetery. The older section has been cleaned of brush, but is not kept as neatly mowed as the newer portion.
John House visited the cemetery in 1917. He noted a few stones in the older section that I was unable to locate. All of the stones found in the original cemetery will be marked with as asterisk (*), all those noted by John House will be marked with a double asterisk (**). No doubt, there are several unmarked graves in the old section.
This is a complete reading of all existing headstones from when I walked and transcribed this cemetery on May 15, 2004.
