Wirt County Cemeteries
| Location: | Located off Rose Hill Rd. Take old Rt. 14 north out of Elizabeth, WV to Rose Hill Rd. Make a left onto Rose Hill Rd. Travel about 3 miles until you come to where pavement ends. There will be a white house on your right. Just where the pavement ends, you will see a road to your left that goes down over the hill. Take this road and about 1/10 of a mile. The cemetery and old church will be on your left. You can park on the right. |

Most of the burials in this cemetery are connected with the Lockhart family. There are several sunken graves and also about 6 tombstones that could not be read. I was told that John L. Lockhart and Monroe Lockhart (his son) both were preachers and I believe this was their church.

** NOTE: Martha A Lockhart, first wife of John L. Lockhart is listed on his tombstone with him. She also has a tombstone in Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery in Palestine. It reads: Martha A Vaught, wife of John Lockhart, Died Jan. 22, 1875 I do not know which cemetery she was actually buried in. Perhaps she was buried in Palestine and then reinterred at Central Baptist - or perhaps John wanted all 3 of his wives' names on his tombstone. She is on the front of the tombstone. On the left side is Susan E (his 3rd wife) and on the right side is Elizabeth (his 2nd wife). I did not find any engraving on the back..
