Fay Weese

Our loving brother, uncle and friend, Fay Weese, departed this life peacefully surrounded by his family and caregivers in the early morning hours of June 25, 2007. Fay had been ill for several months, receiving care at his home on 605 Brown Ave. in Belington from a devoted group of special ladies who assured that his last days were full of laughter and love.

Mr. Weese was born Dec. 29, 1919, at Mt. Liberty community in Barbour County, a son of the late Harold “Pappy” and Ethel Booth Weese.

He had never married but was preceded in death by a very special friend and companion, Irene England, also of Belington.

Mr. Weese is survived by two brothers, Arnold Weese and wife, Patty, of Belington and Luther Weese and wife, Connie, of Belington; three sisters, Irene Ensminger of Roanoke, Va., Ruth “Tootsie” Mitchell and Nina Lee Allen and husband, Bud, of Belington. Also surviving are five devoted nieces and nephews who were a large part of his life, Lamarr Weese, Cheryl Kelley, Shon Weese, Lisa Ferguson and Traci Furby. His loving care givers, Blanche Price, Kim Summers, Sue Vest, Julie Price, Colleen Bartlett and Maddie Kelley, all provided kind tender care during his last months. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Norman “Bus” Weese, Grant “Dick” Weese, Garfield Weese, Bill Weese, Homer Weese and Eugene “Bunny” Weese; and sister, Erma; as well as two infant sisters, Mary and Martha.

Mr. Weese was a graduate of Philippi High School. His first employment was operating a dry cleaning and pressing shop which he ran from his home. He was former owner of the K&W Feed Store located in Belington. He retired from Southern States Cooperative in Philippi after many years of dedicated service. Mr. Weese most recently owned and operated Fay’s Variety Store when he enjoyed “talking shop” with the many friends who visited on a daily basis. He is perhaps best remembered for selling licenses to hunters from several states that traditionally made their yearly visit to the store for their license and buck stamps. These hunters will greatly miss his friendly presence and encouraging words of “good luck, boys.”

Mr. Weese was very active in the community and church. He was a member of Belington Lodge 73 IOOF, Belington Masonic Lodge 125 AF&AM, a 32nd degree mason and belonged to the Shrine Osiris Temple in Wheeling. He was a faithful member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He formerly sang in the Methodist Men Quartet with his brothers where he enjoyed singing gospel music.

Mr. Weese was a tremendous brother, uncle and, indeed, a gentleman. At the end, his gentle and kind heart finally gave out after touching the lives of those he came in contact with. He will be deeply missed.

Friends will be received from Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St. in Belington from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., at which time Mr. Weese will be moved to Asbury United Methodist Church where friends may call from noon to 1 p.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted along with a time of sharing and reflecting with the Rev. Arden Beck and the Rev Robert Baer Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery near Belington where members of the Belington Masonic Lodge 125 AF&AM will conduct the ritualistic Masonic graveside rite. The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Hospice Care, 7 Harman Center, Suite 203, Grafton, W.Va. 26354. Talbott Funeral Home in Belington is in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Fay Weese. Condolences may be expressed to the family at talbottfuneralhome.com.  From 26 Jun 2007.

Martha Wehrle

Martha Wehrle - A former state senator who was the only woman to serve as Queen Silvia and whose daughter held the same title died following a brief illness last week.

Martha Wehrle, 81, became ill on a return flight to Charleston and developed a fever that rose to 105 degrees. She died Oct. 31 in the Charleston Area Medical Center.

She was born in 1925 in Fayette County, attended Charleston public schools and earned degrees from Vassar and Harvard. She and her late husband, Russell, were pillars of McJunkin Corp. before its recent sale.

She entered politics by leading efforts to pass an excess property tax levy to support Kanawha County schools. She was then elected to the House of Delegates where she served 14 years before being appointed to her Senate seat.     At the start of the 1991 session, she suffered a broken hip, but attended on crutches and worked diligently.

“She was a strong lady, like an oak tree,” friend Angus Peyton said.

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones described Wehrle as “warm and wonderful — she spent her life privately and publicly helping other people.”

U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., noted that “she and her late husband, Russ, were among the first two people who befriended me when I first came to West Virginia 43 years ago.”

U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., called her an “extraordinarily gracious and intelligent friend. Her father was a Republican and her mother a Democrat, but Martha always brought her own unique perspective to issues.”     Byrd said Wehrle was “conscientious and hard-working,” with a “keenly curious and agile mind,” and “wealth of expert knowledge in topics as diverse as education, health, sociology, philosophy, ethics, art and fashion.”

Wehrle served as Queen Silvia in the 1949 Mountain State Forest Festival. Her daughter, Chilton Wherle, was appointed as Queen Silvia in 1988.   From 8 Nov 2007.
