Randolph Rosie the Riveter Leona Phares Dies at 86
Leona M. Phares, a Randolph County native locally known as a "Rosie the Riveter," has died. She was 86.
Phares, who passed away Sunday at her home in Elkins, was one of 6 million women to man manufacturing jobs during World War II while the men were off fighting the war.
During the Depression era, Phares and her husband, Dempsey, moved to Ohio looking for better employment opportunities. Later, Mr. Phares was drafted into the war, and Mrs. Phares, with two children already in the family, decided to go to work.
After a brief stint at Brown and Graves, a factory that made windows, Leona Phares became employed at Goodyear Aircraft.
At Goodyear Aircraft, Phares worked the third shift in Plant C, primarily working on the tail parts for B-29 aircrafts. She helped build the Enola Gay, the famed bomber that dropped an atomic bomb on Japan.
After the war, the Phareses returned to the Mountain State where they raised 13 children.
However, it wasn't until recent years that Mrs. Phares became aware that she was a “Rosie.”
In May 2004, Phares and four other “Rosies” were invited to breakfast at the White House with President George W. Bush. In addition, she met First Lady Laura Bush and then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, among others.

Earlier this year, Phares’ daughter-in-law, Gail J. Phares, published “Leona’s Journey and How She Did It!,” a historical/biography of Leona Phares.
Mrs. Phares received her beautician’s license in 1970 and operated Phares’ Beauty Shop on Chestnut Street in Elkins. She was a candidate for Elkins mayor in 1977 and 1979, campaigning for cleaner drinking water.
She was a member of the Delphia Rebekah Lodge 62, Eagles fraternal organization and the ladies auxiliaries to the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was a Protestant by faith.
Phares was born Sept. 8, 1921, in Beverly, a daughter of the late Norval Asbury Watson and Nancy Jane Sachs Watson.
