Louie E. Gutshall

Louie Ellis Gutshall died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006.

Born Feb. 22, 1924, and raised in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Ellis and Louvilla Gutshall.

In his youth, Louie excelled in sports and developed a lifelong love of all sports, especially baseball.

He was in the U.S. Army during World War II, having served in the European theater with Patton’s Third Army.

He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was on the front line when the concentration camp at Buchenwald was liberated.

Louie was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge and was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned home where he eventually opened the Community Market, a full-service grocery store.

After more than 20 years in the grocery business, Louie sold the store and began working as a purchasing agent for Memorial General Hospital until his retirement.

In 1990, Louie moved to South Carolina to be closer to his children and grandchildren.

Throughout his life, Louie loved his God, his country and his family. He always chose to “do the right thing.” Louie was kind to friends and strangers, always looking out for those in need. He always prayed for peace in a restless world, and when faced with difficult decisions, consistently chose the path of peace. His love was unconditional.

Louie was a loyal fan of the West Virginia University Mountaineers and the Cincinnati Reds. He was an All American soldier, husband, father and “Pop Pop.” His patriotism was an inspiration for all who knew him, and he will be missed.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Riley Gutshall; his daughter, Susie Bennett; daughter and son-in-law, Molly and Harry Harner; and grandchildren, who were the lights of his life, Erin Bennett, Zachary Harner and Samuel Harner.

He is also survived by his brother, Neil Gutshall and wife, Judy; sisters, Mary Skinner and husband, Bob, and Martha Tallman and husband, Ray; sister-in-law, Margaret Gutshall; and several nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by his parents; brother, Meade Gutshall and wife, Rena; and brother, Mervin Gutshall.
