Stella Calain

Stella Ann Calain, 76 years, a resident of the Faulkner Road, passed away at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Pat Calain, following an extended illness.

She was born May 19, 1931, at New York, N.Y., a daughter of the late Emanuel Zahra and the late Bessie Zahra.

She was married to George Calain who preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 2006.

Surviving are a son, Dennis Calain, and wife, Pat, of Faulkner Road; daughter-in-law, Cynthia “Cindy” Calain of Elkins; two sisters, Esther Cali of Bricktown, N.J., and Charlotte Bardavid of Queens, N.Y., five grandchildren, Dennis Calain Jr., Dr. Kenneth Calain, Kathleen Zirkle, Christopher and Sarah Calain; and eight great-grandchildren, Christian, Alexis, Jessica, David, Brent, Alex, Matthew and Elizabeth.

Also preceding her in death besides her husband was a son, Thomas Lee Calain.

Mrs. Calain attended the schools of New York and was a homemaker. She was a member of Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. At 7 p.m. Friday, Randolph Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service from the funeral home chapel. Thomas L. Calain

Thomas Lee “Tom” Calain, 54, a resident of Leading Creek Road, passed away at 12:24 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, in the emergency department of the Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 2, 1953, at Queens, N.Y., a son of Stella Ann Calain, who resides on Faulkner Road and the late George Lewis Calain Jr.

On April 8, 1978, at First United Methodist Church of Elkins, he was married to the former Cynthia Ann “Cindy” Sheets, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Christopher George Calain of Morgantown; one daughter, Sarah Ann Calain of Fairmont; and one brother, Dennis Calain of Faulkner Road. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Tom was a Sgt. 1st Class with the West Virginia National Guard. He served as the fire direction officer with the 201st in Operation Desert Storm. He was an instructor at the Region Training Institute at Camp Dawson and retired from the West Virginia National Guard after 24 years of service. He was a licensed insurance agent and was registered with the New York Stock Exchange. Tom was a former member of Elkins Lodge No. 108 A.F. and A.M. He coached youth baseball and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elkins.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Saturday morning, Nov. 3, he will be moved to First United Methodist Church in Elkins where friends may call from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Conley will officiate and interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens. Full military honors will be provided at the graveside by members of Tygart Valley Post 3647, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the West Virginia Honor Guard from Camp Dawson. Lawrence Lester Calcamp, 83, of Eglon, passed away May 22, 2007, in Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland, Md.

Arbelia G. (Armentrout) Calhoun, 92, of Upper Tract, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at the home of her son, Reginald Calhoun, of Upper Tract.

Francis Marion “Frank” Canfield, 67, a native of Elkins, a former resident of Cumberland, Md., and more recently a resident of Concord, N.C., departed this life Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, in Universal Health Care at Concord, N.C.

Francis Marion “Frank” Canfield, 67, a native of Elkins, a former resident of Cumberland, Md., and more recently a resident of Concord, N.C., departed this life Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, in Universal Health Care at Concord, N.C.

He was born Tuesday, March 12, 1940, at Elkins, a son of the late C. Leon Canfield and Margaret S. Wickwire Canfield.

Surviving are one son, the Rev. David A. Canfield and wife, Debbie, of Concord, N.C.; one brother, Charles R. “Sonny” Canfield and wife, Juanita, of Miami, Fla.; three sisters, Margaret L. Buffaloe of Solomon, Md., Lois “Gail” Flynn of Silver Spring, Md., and Beverly S. Rodriquez of Pinto, Md.; three grandchildren, Ashley, Austin and Avery Canfield, all of Concord, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were two brothers; Gary Leon and Patrick Lynn Canfield.

Frank was a graduate of Allegany High School in Cumberland, Md., with the class of 1958, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served with the U.S. Army Reserve for three years. He had worked for more than 30 years as a program coordinator and controller for the Army Map Service, which later became the Defense Mapping Agency at Washington, D.C., and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church at Concord, N.C.

He was very friendly, and he was extremely dedicated to his work having received many awards including a special award for his work during Operation Desert Storm.

Lacy P. Canfield

Lacy Parker Canfield, 72, a resident of Route 1, Beverly, the East Dailey community, departed this life early Monday morning, Oct. 29, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Wednesday, Jan. 9, 1935, at Poe Run, Randolph County, a son of the late Cecil H. Canfield and Virgie Ellen Weese Canfield Webley Phares.

Surviving are three brothers, Howard and Merle Webley, both of Elkins and Jack Webley of Ohio; six sisters, Thelma E. Higgins of Buckhannon, Wilma Biller of Kerens, Shelby Weese of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Patricia Bland of Berkeley Springs, Lou Ella Creel of Virginia, and Martha Bowers of Elkins; a special companion of 25 years, Joan Crouch of East Dailey and her three children, Angela and Richard Fretwell, both of Elkins and Ronald Fretwell of Pensacola, Fla.; and her two grandchildren, Alicia Fretwell and Olivia Deville, both of Elkins.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Denver E. Canfield and Tom Webley; and one sister, Dolores Shannon.

He attended the schools of Randolph County and Elkins High School and had worked for Monongahela Power Co. for 28 years, retiring in 1990 as a bulldozer operator and excavator, enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman and loved his boat.

Lou A. Canfield

Lou Ann Canfield, 72, of Hardy, Va., formerly of Parkersburg, died Oct. 8, 2007, at Roanoke, Va.

She was born at Sutton, a daughter of the late Oley Jennings Wine and Jessie Lee Gillespie Wine.

She was a retired operating room nurse for St. Joseph Hospital. Lou Ann was past president of ARON, was the first person to receive the CRNFA and second person to receive the CNOR recognitions. Lou Ann was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church in Washington, where she was past president of the United Methodist Women Organization, a member of the church choir, the Fairview Gospel Singers, and held many office positions at the church. She was very active in the Parkersburg Actors Guild and was a six-year member of the board of directors of the Ohio Community Theater Association.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Jeffrey Home of Hardy, Va.; and one brother, Eddie Mac Wine of Bridgeport.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Canfield.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Crawford. Thurman Canfield, 80, a resident of the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 4, 1926, in Randolph County, a son of the late Calvin and Icie Lena Cross Canfield.

He was never married.

Surviving are five brothers, Troy Canfield of Stringtown, Barbour County, Ray Canfield and Truman Canfield, both of Montrose, Sance Canfield of Elkins and Ward Canfield of Pheasant Run; and three sisters, Pauline Arbogast of the Elkins Manor, Bessie Wilfong and Hazel Bedford, both of Montrose. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews including Dennis Arbogast, Lena Vandevender, Steve and Jeff Canfield, all of Montrose and Helen Howell and Lee Canfield, both of Elkins.

Preceding him in death were one brother, Willie Canfield and three sisters, Mary Eva Newlon, Geraldine Canfield and Anna Grace Null.

Mr. Canfield had worked at the Canfield Sawmill as a timber cutter and a mill worker until his retirement.

Alice L. Canon

Alice Lucretia Canon, 84, of Thomas died Nov. 23, 2007.

She was born March 17, 1923, at Thomas, a daughter of the late Walter Grant Helmick and Mary Belle Shaffer Helmick.

She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Willis Canon.

Surviving are two sons, Roy Eugene and wife, Phyllis Helmick, of Davis and Carl Brenton and wife, Janet Canon, of Thomas; two daughters, Romaine Carol and husband, Ed Arnold, of Davis and Betsy Lucretia and husband, Ferman Whitehair, of Davis; two sisters, Leona Cleland of Pomeroy, Ohio, and Romaine Stanton of Phoenix, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Terance W. Canon; four brothers, Hayes, Herbert, Roy and Eugene; three sisters, Nellie Bunnell, Jessie Marshall and Flo Dove.

She was a bookkeeper for Fairfax Sand and Gravel for many years. She was a charter member of Canaan Valley Baptist Church and a former member of Rebekah Lodge and Macbeeses.

William Canter, 69, of Volga, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

He was born Aug. 25, 1937, at Richwood, a son of the late Denny Canter and Elizabeth Riffle Center.

On Aug. 22, 1973, he was married to Connie Beckner Canter, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Betty Lemons and husband, Bobby, and Beverly Canter, all of Buckhannon; one grandson, Bobby Lemons II of Buckhannon; three brothers, Jack Canter, Doc Canter and Gay Canter, all of Buckhannon; and four sisters, Josephine Fitzgerald of Georgia, Betty Bowman of Buckhannon, Jean Claypool of Hackers Creek and Trecia Lowther of Buckhannon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Becky Canter; and several brothers and sisters.

He was an auto mechanic with the West Virginia Department of Highways.

Rocco A. Carbone, husband of Maureen Carroll Carbone, passed away at home Sept. 6, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 29, 1940, Rocco was the son of the late Vincent and Rose Carbone.

The funeral Liturgy was celebrated Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church by Father Julian Marneni. The Rite of Committal followed at Spring Hill Cemetery.

He was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he was a lector and a Eucharist minister, a member of the St. Joseph’s Men’s Club and Knight’s of Columbus.He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and attended Northwestern University in Massachusetts and was an avid Marshall, Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He was employed at Service Wire as credit manager for 32 years.

He is survived by one daughter, Kathleen and Kevin Swecker; two sons, Christopher and Erica Carbone and Timothy and Stacy Carbone; six grandchildren, Leisa and Ann Swecker and fiance, Brad Wiggs, Sophia and Dominic Carbone, Maria Carbone and Joshua Walters; and one great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Wiggs. In addition, he is survived by two sisters, Millie Randazzo and Catherine Carbone; one half brother, Vincent Carbone; two half sisters, Frances and Antionella; three sisters-in-law, Mary Pat and Bill Spensky, Jean and Ron Schmid and Mary Margaret Carroll and Jim Curtis; two brothers-in-law, Bill and Pam Carroll and Mike Carroll and fiancee, Mary Ellen Booth; several nieces and nephews; lifelong friends, Jack and Jo Ann Wetherall and Big Al Novick; and a host of other extraordinary friends.

A special thanks to Hospice, Dr. Kimmey, Dr. Sharma, Dr. Roberts, Dr. Goetz and staff for all the loving care they showed Rocco during his illness.

Jean Carden, a resident of Bridgeport, died Tuesday, March 1, 2007, at her home.

She was born at Weston, a daughter of the late Clyde McKinley and Blanche McKinley McKinley.

She was married to John Dana Carden, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are one niece, Mrs. Charles (Nancy) Voelkl of Kettering, Ohio; one great-nephew, Ted Voelkl and wife, Susan, of Ohio; one great-niece, Carla Howley and children of Ohio; and four cousins, Mary Ellen Nehoda and Lynn Nehoda, both of Nitro, Bill McKinley and wife, Jo Ann, and Elizabeth Mooney, all of Weston.

Also preceding her in death was one sister, Mrs. M.W. Steele.

She was the administrative assistant to P. Martin at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Jean was a graduate of Fairmont State College. She was involved with Upshur County Girl Scouts and for many years was a member of the board of Upshur County American Red Cross. Also, for many years, she worked tirelessly for the success of the Buckhannon Community Concert Association.

She was a life member of St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary, member of Buckhannon Arts Alliance, Upshur County Historical Society, worked with the Area Crippled Children’s Clinic, which was co-sponsored by the Buckhannon Rotary Club, and the State Department of Welfare, Emeritus Club WVWC, PEO, Daughters of the American Revolution Elizabeth Zane Chapter, American Association of University Women, West Virginia Hills Chapter of American Colonists and the Buckhannon Country Club.

She will lie in state at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home on Saturday, May 5, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour with Dr. Hebert Coston officiating. Interment will follow in Weston Masonic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to West Virginia Wesleyan Scholarship Fund in memory of Jean Carden. Alice Jean Carpenter, 64, of Ellamore, died Monday, June 18, 2007, at her home.

She was born Aug. 20, 1942, at Akron, Ohio, a daughter of the late Peral and Ruby Radcliff Coakley.

She was united in marriage on Sept. 17, 1961, to James D. Carpenter, who survives.

She is survived by three daughters, Jackie and husband, Howard J. Miller, of Coalton, Judy and husband, Steve Kelley, of Northville, Ohio, and Jessecka Carpenter and significant other, Keith Gray, of Philippi; two sons, James Carpenter Jr. and significant other, Sherry Young, of Belington and Joseph and wife, Nina Carpenter, of Ellamore; 11 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Roy Coakley of Buckhannon; and two sisters, Pat Fowler of Ravenna, Ohio, and Iris Boyles of Pennsylvania.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Coakley.

Dale L. Carpenter, 70, of Hacker Valley, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in Ruby Memorial Hospital as a result of a farm tractor accident.

He was born Sunday, Jan. 17, 1937, at Hacker Valley, the son of Opha Elbert Carpenter and Ada Pearl Fisher Carpenter of Hacker Valley.

Surviving are one daughter, Bonnie Quick of French Creek; one son, Ronnie Lee Carpenter and wife, Katina, of Buckhannon; two sisters, Gathel Wireman and husband, Harold, of French Creek and Thelma Currence of Sutton; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Carl Glenn Carpenter and Donald Carpenter; and one brother, Ray Carpenter.

He was retired from the Chrysler-Stanton Plant in Twinsburg, Ohio, after 33 years of service. He had lived in Ohio for 45 years. He attended Independent Baptist Church in Cleveland and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Fred M. Carr Sr., 72, of, 455 Greenville Road, Bristolville, Ohio, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 11, 1934, at Kerens, a son of the late Kenna and Dolly Raines Carr.

He moved to Bristolville, Ohio, 50 years ago.

Fred was employed as a welder for ITT Grinnell for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed hunting, bicycling, riding Argo and fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Mary B. Roy Carr of Bristolville, Ohio, whom he married May 4, 1963; two sons, Fred M. (Janet) Carr Jr. of Kinsman, Ohio, and Tim (Marion) Carr of Bristolville, Ohio; two daughters, Peggy S. (Bob Hutchison) White of Champion, Ohio, and Sarah L. (Larry) Carr of Leavittsburg, Ohio; seven grandchildren; a brother, Warren G. Carr of Wayne, Ohio; and four sisters, Audrey DeBolt, Eulujean (Thomas) Dean and Annie Bryant Ashley, all of Elkins, and Sadie Mae (Robert) Smith of Oak Hill.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Merle, Hobert, Morris and Edward Carr.

Mrs. Martha Evelyn Ferguson Carr, 87, a resident of 259 Terrace Ave. in Elkins, and more recently a resident of Talbott Personal Care Home in Belington, departed this life at 4:25 p.m. April 9, 2007, at the care facility following an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Wayne County, Ind., the only daughter of the late Linville and Lena Luddington Ferguson.

On Aug. 29, 1941, she was united in marriage to John P. Carr, who preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 2002.

She is survived by two sons, Jay Carr and wife, Carol, of Hummelstown, Pa., and William G. Carr of Elkins; and one daughter, Marnnie Holden and husband, Richard, of Timonium, Md. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Kristen Ross, Chad Carr, Ryan Haden and Jon-Marc Haden; and two great-grandchildren, Ainsley Ross and Graham Ross.

Mrs. Carr attended Dennison University and also graduated from the Washington School for Secretaries in Washington, D.C. She was a longtime active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Elkins and was a very active member of the Elkins YMCA. Mrs. Carr was a devoted wife, mother and a very treasured friend to many in the Elkins area.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Robert Stanley Carr, 83, a resident of Hendricks, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday afternoon, Feb. 1, 2007, at his home.

He was born Saturday, Jan. 26, 1924, at Gladwin, a son of the late Oliver Carr and Louisa Carr.

On March 29, 1947, he was married to the former Joy Maxine Burns, who preceded him in death Nov. 25, 2001. Surviving are two daughters, Joyce Knotts and husband, Kenneth Jr., of Dunbar and Sandi George and husband, Gene, of Elkins; and one brother, the Rev. Floyd Carr of Hendricks.

Preceding him in death was one daughter, Brenda S. Murray; five brothers, Glen, Warren, Pete, Hobert and Sturley Carr; and seven sisters, Lillie Plaugher, Retha White, Nellie Jenkins, Dovie Johnson, Mary Carr, Marjorie Lyon and Hazel Carr.

He attended the schools of Jenningston, was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army as a sergeant in India for three years, worked for the former Dorman Mills for many years and was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God at Rosendorf.

Thomas D. Carr

Thomas Dee Carr, 49, a former resident of Tucker County and a resident of Corunna, Mich., departed this life Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, in Owosso Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso, Mich. Death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Thursday, Aug. 28, 1958, at Barberton, Ohio, a son of the late Lindsey W. Carr and Gertrude Hedrick Carr. On June 25, 1983, in West Virginia, he was married to the former Pamela Moore, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Travis Carr of Texas; one daughter, Michelle Carr of Corunna, Mich.; two brothers, Terry Carr of Ludington, Mich., and Michael Carr of West Virginia; four sisters, Linda Canfield and husband, Charles, of West Virginia, Bonita Yeager and husband, Gene, Beverly “Bev” Simmons and Susan Rohr and husband, Jamie, all of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were one nephew, Lindsey Rohr; and two nieces, Katie Yeager and Ashley Lipscomb.

He was a graduate of Parsons High School. He worked for Hanson Brick Co. in Corunna, Mich. He was an avid baseball and softball fan. He coached baseball and he taught his son and daughter how to play baseball. He loved hunting and golf. His family and friends were most important to him. He gave strength to everyone he touched. He took the family patriarch role and he loved his family farm in Parsons on Shavers Fork.

Mr. Thomas Milford Carr, 88, a resident of Bowden, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2007, in Providence Medford Medical Center in Medford, Ore.

He was born May 10, 1919, at Sully, the youngest son of the late James H. and Fannie E. Carr.

Surviving are a son, Dale Carr and wife, Virginia, of Central Point, Ore.; a daughter, Rebecca Taylor and husband, Jerry, of Central Point, Ore.; and grandchildren, Jasmine, Errol, Isaak and Brighton Carr, Sara and Chris Meracle, all of Central Point, Ore.

Preceding him in death besides his parents were a daughter, Janelle Buser; sisters, Lullie Jones, Edith Armstrong, Alpha Huffman and Miriam Cooper; and a brother, Glenn Carr.

Mr. Carr was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He worked as a forest ranger for the U.S. Forest Service. His hobbies included gardening, woodworking and botany. He enjoyed family gatherings and hugs from his grandchildren. He will be missed by all.

Hobart Clifton Carrico, 84, a resident of Westview Drive, Elkins, departed this life early Thursday morning, April 19, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sunday, May 28, 1922, at Kingwood, a son of the late Homer Hobart Carrico and Lula Beryl Craig Carrico.

On June 2, 1946, he was married to the former, Mary Jane Marquette Carrico, who preceded him in death July 17, 1976.

In addition, he is survived by Mildred Raikes Goldberg; one son, Mark Clifton Carrico of Tallahassee, Fla.; two daughters, Joann Gabel and husband, Paul, of Elkins and Mary Jane Dennie and husband, John, of Tallahassee, Fla.; and six grandchildren, Jason Gabel of Columbus, Ohio, Melissa Gabel of Lexington, Ky., Lora Gabel of Elkins and Marin, Kaelyn and Braydon Dennie, all of Tallahassee, Fla.

Preceding him in death was one sister, Jean Carrico.

He attended the schools of Monongalia County, was a graduate of Morgantown High School with the class of 1940, was a graduate of West Virginia University with an associate’s degree and a doctor of jurisprudence degree, and he had served with the U.S. Army during World War II in China, Burma and India. Mr. Carrico had practiced law in Elkins before joining the Central Intelligence Agency. Upon his return to Elkins, he taught business law at Davis & Elkins College. He had traveled extensively throughout the United States and the world, having visited all 50 states and all continents except Antarctica. He was a member of the Signa Society (CIA), Phi Alpha Delta, Kappa Alpha, Elkins Lodge 1135, BPOE, H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus Council 603, Randolph County Bar Association, Elkins Masonic Lodge 108 AF & AM, Osiris Temple of Wheeling and Saint Brendan Catholic Church.

At Mr. Carrico’s request, his remains were cremated. Betty R. Carte

Betty R. Carte, 77, of Salem and formerly of Weston, passed away Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, in Sunbridge Nursing Home in Salem.

She was born April 12, 1930, at Chemical, in Upshur County.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Rhoda Mauler England; and by her father and stepmother, Arvin and Mae Mauler England.

Her first husband, Raymond Donald Hensell, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Carte is survived by her husband, Francis “Frank” Carte of Salem who she married Aug. 31, 1970; two sons, Raymond Hensell and wife, Brenda, of Seville, Ohio, and George Hensell and wife, Linda, of Salem; a daughter, Carol Ann Hensell Mikulin and husband, Richard, of New Boston, Mich.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert England of Cleveland, Ohio; and six sisters, Dorothy Myers of Clarkston, Mich., Lula Fox of Cleveland, Ohio, Jean Adkins, of Pontiac, Mich., Virginia Turpin of Sevierville, Tenn., Louise Young of Ravenna, Ohio, and Beatrice Ellis of Cleveland, Ohio.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers.

Mrs. Carte was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary of Cleveland, Ohio. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of San Mateo, Fla.

Richard Stanley Carter, 64, of Arbovale, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2007, at his home in Arbovale.

Born Jan. 16, 1943, at Norristown, Pa., he was a son of the late Alan Stanley and Verna Pfleiger Carter.

Mr. Carter was a retired engineer and technician for both Cass Scenic Railroad and New Hope Railroad in New Hope, Pa. He was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving are his wife, Janice Mullenax Carter; a daughter, Mary Ann Smith and husband, John, of Hedgesville; two grandchildren, Hunter Wachter and Sierra Smith; two brothers, Raymond Carter and wife, Julie, of Jacksonville, N.C., and David Lee Carter and wife, Donna, of Norristown, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

James Elbert Cassell, 90, of Davis, passed away Sept. 10, 2007, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.

He was born June 13, 1917, at Huntington, a son of the late Robert and Laura Salmon Cassell.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Corrall Cassell; one son, Robert and Maria Cassell of Greenbackville, Va.; two granddaughters, Linda Crafton and Karen Dixon; four great-grandchildren, Jessica Snap, Bryan Snap, Zachary Dixon and Haley Dixon.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wallace, Herbert and Junior; and four sisters, Ona, Ethel, Sadie and Georgie.

Mr. Cassell was employed as a glass maker by Chatanooga Glass Co. of Baltimore, Md. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and was Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 2010.

Christlena Alberta Miller Cassidy, 96, a resident of Leadmine, and more recently of Cortland Acres Nursing Home, died Thursday evening, Feb. 1, 2007, in the nursing home due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Mrs. Cassidy had made her home with her son, Paul, and family, Sharon, Amanda and Chris, prior to going to Cortland Acres.

She was born Sunday, July 3, 1910, at Shaffertown, a daughter of the late Christopher Arnold and Harriet Louise Nethken Miller.

On May 22, 1928, she was married to Cyrus M. Cassidy, who preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1984. They had celebrated 55 years of marriage.

Surviving are three sons, John Wesley Cassidy of St. George, Charles Arnold Cassidy and wife, Sarah, of Guntersville, Ala., and Paul Richard Cassidy Sr. and wife, Sharon, of Leadmine; two sisters, Janet Louise Rhoades of Hambleton and Florence Freda Cogley of St. Cloud, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Preceding her in death was her twin sister, Martha Elizabeth Bohon; one brother, Joseph Roland Miller; two half brothers, Ruben and Robert Friend; one half sister, Deggie Alice Friend; and one daughter-in-law, Reland Bondell Cassidy.

Mrs. Cassidy was a former employee at Harper’s General Store and Post Office and Lipscomb’s Store in Leadmine. She was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing and hooking rugs. She was well known for making homemade butter and cheese. She was a Christian by faith and affiliated with Leadmine United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received at Hinkle Funeral Home of Davis today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Leadmine United Methodist Church with the Rev. Archie Neil Casto, 67, of French Creek, died Friday, June 29, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.

He was born June 15, 1940, at French Creek, a son of the late Archie O. Casto and Ada Mable Hyre Casto.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Loy Casto.

He was a steel worker for Crucible. He attended French Creek Methodist Church and was a member of the American Legion.

Cecil M. Casto Sr., 72, of Buckhannon, the Bailey Ridge community, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.

He was born April 2, 1934, in Upshur County, a son of the late Hobart and Della Mae Casto Tenney.

He was united in marriage on Oct. 23, 1982, to Dortha Ann Bosley Casto, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Helen Casto Burnside of Buckhannon; one son, Cecil M. Casto Jr. of North Carolina; one stepson, Rocky Simmons of Adrian; one grandson, two stepgrandchildren and four step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Tenney and Johnville Tenney, both of French Creek; and one sister, Hazel Tenney of Buckhannon.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Arthur Tenney.

Virgie Fae Casto, 100, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, June 26, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.

She was born Sept. 9, 1906, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Luther Mick and Elta Strader Mick.

On Sept. 14, 1929, she was married to Harold Anthony “Happy” Casto, who preceded her in death Jan. 17, 1968.

Surviving are one sister, Hellen Easterday of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Junior Mick and Oral Mick; and three sisters, Ada Romine, Hilda Maxwell and Madeline McKinney.

She was the owner/operator of Happy Casto’s Store and attended Heaston United Methodist Church in Hodgesville. She was a member of Pringle Tree Extension Homemakers Club and was active in many church groups and community organizations. She graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan and taught school for 10 years in Upshur County.

Lewis Woodford Cave, 63, a resident of Baltimore, Md., passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, in Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

He had never married.

He is survived by one brother, Virgil Cave of Delaware; and four sisters, Carolyn Hedrick of Glady, Sylvia Booth and Sherri Finneyfrock of Baltimore, Md., and Delores English of Texas.

Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Joey, Richard, Bill and John Cave; and two sisters, Rose Davids and Linda Robertson.

Mr. Cave was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in the U.S. Army and had worked as a millwright for Berry Plastics. He was a member of Maryland Steel Workers, the American Legion and was a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

Effie Smith Cavender, 89, of Marion, Ind., died at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, in University Nursing Center, Upland, Ind.

Effie was born Jan. 31, 1918, at Elkins, the daughter of the late Kent and Lulu Kelly Mouse.

She was married to Lewis E. Smith, who preceded her in death in 1948. She then married Cleopus Cavender, who preceded her in death in 1964.

She was an active member of her church where she taught the children’s Sunday school class and sang in the church choir in Charleston. Most recently, she was a member of The North-East Church of God, Marion, Ind. She loved to collect anything to do with mice and she loved her grandchildren dearly.

Survivors include sons, the Rev. Darrell and Barbara Smith, senior pastor of The North-East Church of God, Marion Inc., and senior chaplain of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Marion, Ind., and Allen and Melva Smith of Maryland; daughter-in-law, Alice Smith of Ocala, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Carol Wendt of Washington, D.C., and Joyce and Barry Clark of New York; sisters, Elfa “Sis” Lloyd and Martha Smith, both of Elkins and Irene and Burk Lowery of Catonsville, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jim Smith; two brothers, Guy Mouse and Glenn Moutz; and two sisters, Odessa Mace and Nellie Mouse.

Roger McKay Chambers, 70, a resident of Elkins, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, at his residence.

He was born April 1, 1937, at Bristol, Conn., a son of the late Charles Duncan Chambers and Beatrice Dee Delano Chambers.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st Class and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a former member of the Plainville Fife and Drum Corp. He was a tool and die maker with Stanley Works until his retirement.

Roger is survived by two daughters, Mary Lee Teter and Jill Marie Mayer. Also surviving are two brothers, Ronald and Charles Chambers; five grandchildren, Megan Helmick, Anna and Kristen Mayer, Leigh and Jacob Kisamore; and two great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was one daughter, Laurie Kisamore.

Edwin Milton Chase, 57, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, in Louis A. Johnson Medical Center in Clarksburg.

He was born March 21, 1950, a son of the late Paul Edwin and Thelma May Lantz Chase.

Edwin is survived by three sisters, Cindy Long and husband, James, of Buckhannon, Jane Austinson and husband, Butch, of California, and Faye Hart and husband, Richard, of Saudi Arabia; a niece, Melanie Moreno of Florida; a nephew, Jamie Hart of Texas; several great-nieces and a great-nephew.

Ed was a skilled carpenter and was masterful when working with his hands and had a skilled patience for detailed work. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971.

Anna Bernice Chenoweth, 87, a resident of Baker Street, Elkins, departed this life early Friday morning, Sept. 7, 2007, at the Monongalia General Hospital at Morgantown. She had been in declining health for the past three years.

She was born Saturday, Nov. 22, 1919, on the family farm at Chenoweth Creek, a daughter of the late Fred Chenoweth and Virginia D. Bartlett Chenoweth.

She had never married. Surviving is her cousin, Barbara McCallum of Elkins.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Capt. John B. Chenoweth, U.S. Army retired, a former sheriff of Randolph County and State Senator at the time of his death; and Randolph Chenoweth, who operated the family farm.

Ms. Chenoweth was a graduate of Elkins High School and Davis & Elkins College. She started her career in early 1940 with state government in Elkins, as an employee of the State Department of Purchases in Charleston and in 1946 was employed as a secretary in the business office of Concord State College in Athens for a short time before returning to the family farm due to illness in her family.

In 1947 and 1949, Ms. Chenoweth accompanied the late State Senator Henry J. McKinley to Charleston as a personal secretary during legislative sessions. In 1955, she was employed at the Memorial General Hospital as the chief of the secretarial pool for several years and she accepted short-term employment with a Medical Center at Long Island, N.Y.

In 1962 she was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Washington, D.C., and retired in 1985 with 23 years of service as the assistant coordinator of management and communications for the Farmers Home Administration within the department. She returned to Elkins in 1992.

She was a member of the Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center, the H.W. Daniel’s Post 29, American Legion Auxiliary and was a protestant by faith. She enjoyed visiting the ill and assisting her friends in their time of need.

Mildred F. “Jackie” Chenoweth, 83, a resident of the Glenmore community, Elkins, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at 10:22 a.m. at her residence. She had been in failing health, however death was sudden.

Born July 23, 1924, at Woodbridge, Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert lee and Virginia Shanaholts Sullivan.

On April 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to John D. Chenoweth, who preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1984.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were three brothers, Chloman, Winfield and Wallace Sullivan; and one grandson, Richard Paul “Ricky” Chenoweth.

Jackie is survived by two daughters, Estelle “Tille” Biller and husband, Robert, of Dailey and Linda White and husband, Eugene, of Canton, Ohio; three stepdaughters, Brenda West and husband, Charles, of Helenwood, Tenn. Viola Higgins of Elkins and Ida Ruth Sweckert and husband, Leo, of North Carolina; three sons, Bobby Chenoweth and wife, Kathy, of Glenmore community, where they made their home with Jackie for 23 years, John R. Chenoweth of Elkins and Gary D. Chenoweth and wife, Cheri, of Buckhannon; two stepsons, Donnie Chenoweth and wife, Eilene, of Montrose and Ronnie Chenoweth and wife, Ritha, of Kelly Mountain; one sister, Estelle Carney of Dale City, Va.; and one brother, Floyd Sullivan and wife, Rosenna, of North Carolina. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, several stepgreat-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, several stepgreat-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Jackie was a homemaker. She welcomed people into her home with open arms over the years. Jackie had love in her heart for everyone. She never meet a stranger. Jackie was greatly loved by her family and friends. She will be greatly missed but will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her. “Heaven has gained a special angel.”

On May 23, 1986, at the First Church of Christ at Elkins, she was married to Ronald D. Chenoweth, who preceded her in death June 18, 1992.

Surviving are one son, Steve Ray Ketterman and wife, Lisa, of Elkins; her loving sister and caregiver, Alice Ketterman and her son, James Ketterman, of Elkins; and her loving companion and constant caregiver, Don Scott of Junior.

Nancy was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1958, was employed at Garden Fresh and retired with 21 years of service from the A & P Store. She really enjoyed camping with Don and close friends and traveling. She enjoyed woodworking especially sanding. She attended Landmark Baptist Church.

Patricia Ann Monahan Chenoweth, 56, a resident of the Glenmore community, passed away Sunday evening, July 22, 2007, at her home.

She was born Sept. 16, 1950, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Howard Raymond and Mary Galeah Fisher Monahan. Surviving are a son, Allen Dale Chenoweth of Elkins; a daughter, April Marie Chenoweth of Elkins; two brothers. Patricia was employed as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for 30 years prior to her retirement. Bernard Francis “Boney” Chewning, 64, a resident of the Highland Park community, Elkins, departed this life early Tuesday morning, May 15, 2007, at his home. He had been in declining health since March 2006 and death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1942, at Elkins, a son of the late French Roosevelt Chewning and Virginia Alice Sachs Chewning.

On Aug. 30, 1986, at Parsons, he was married to the former Marrianne Shifflet, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Robert Francis Chewning of Ohio, Bernard Francis Chewning of Morehouse, Kan., and Wesley French Chewning, at home; two daughters, Bernadine June Koval of Ohio, and Velvet Starr Nicholson and husband, Byron, of Elkins; three brothers, Fred Phillips, Teddy Chewning and Bernard’s twin brother, Donald Chewning, all of Ohio; seven sisters, Glenda Bennett, Sandra Pauley, Sharon Boggs and Barbara Schultz, all of Ohio, June Grimm and Delma “Bunny” Miller, both of Elkins and Marjorie Pope of Virginia; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and three special friends, Carla and Darin Nicholson and Earl Ward.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Napoleon Phillips; and one sister, Shirlia Beam.

Mr. Chewning attended the schools of Randolph County, was a construction worker and was employed by Summit Condos at Snowshoe.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were three sisters, Edith Pastine, Mandaline Carver and Virginia Shockey; four brothers, Jacob, Howard, Richard and Bernard Shockey; and one grandson, Matthew Barr.

Mary was a homemaker and a member of Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church, where she was a former member of the choir and played both the guitar and harmonica. She was a well known quilter, having made the Queen’s Quilt for the Mountain State Forest Festival for several years. Mary also quilted for the Maple Syrup Festival in Pickens. She quilted over 935 quilts for people in the United States, Cuba and Canada. Mary was loved by many and will be greatly missed by her family and fiends, however she will remain always in their hearts.

Verna Jane Chidester, 88, a resident of Rock Cave, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, at her home.

She was born July 25, 1918, in Braxton County, a daughter of the late James Luther Brown and Martha Didema Knicley Brown.

Verna was united in marriage on Sept. 29, 1941, to Willington Filbert Chidester, who preceded her in death on Dec. 30, 1991.

She is survived by five daughters, Jessie Friend and husband, Henry, of Rock Cave, Betty Friend and husband, Don, of Amherst, Va., Martha “Tiny” Shaw and husband, Clifford, of Buckhannon, Marcella Tinsley and husband, Junior, of Lynchburg, Va., and Kathleen “Kathy” Chidester of New Bethlehem, Pa.; two sons, Gary Lee Chidester of Blue Creek, Ohio, and David Henry Chidester and wife, Marilyn, of Springfield, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Fitzgerald of Alliquippa, Pa., and Pauline Drake of Elyria, Ohio; one brother, Paul Brown of Elyria, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Chidester was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Junior Chidester; one sister, Madgie Casto; two brothers, Estel Brown and Elbert Brown; one grandson, Danny Orick; and one great-grandson, Anthony Friend.

She was a homemaker, a member of Canaan Church and attended Rock Cave Baptist Church.

Mary Jane McCullar “Granny” Chisolm, 87, a resident of Harding, departed this life Saturday morning, Dec. 8, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health.

She was born Wednesday, March 17, 1920, at Coketon, Tucker County, a daughter of the late Rev. Charles McCullar and Emma Jones McCullar.

On Dec. 25, 1941, at Baltimore, Md., she was married to Richard Edward “Dick” Chisolm, who preceded her in death March 31, 1978.

Surviving are three sons, Henry Clinton Chisolm and wife, Jennifer, of Farmington, George Edward Chisolm and wife, Marlene, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Robert Elliott Chisolm and wife, Anita, of Harding; one daughter, Barbara Ellen Tyson and husband, Harold, of Snowshoe; one daughter-in-law, Mattie Oglivia Chisolm of Philippi; and 14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death were one son, Richard Charles “Junior” Chisolm; one daughter, JoAnn Chisolm; three brothers, Richard, Weston and Delmore McCullar; and one sister, Daisy Hill.

She was a graduate of the Elkins Riverside High School with the class of 1941 and attended Davis & Elkins College. She was the housekeeper for the Presbyterian Manse in Elkins during the 1960s and was the head baker for the former Memorial General Hospital from which she retired in 1989. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church at Elkins, the Eastern Star and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Roaring Creek Post 5583, Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was a noted cook.

Richard Charles “Junior” Chisolm, 60, a resident of Philippi, departed this life Tuesday morning, June 26, 2007, at Broaddus Hospital in Philippi. Death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Sunday, Oct. 13, 1946, at Elkins, a son of the late Richard Edward “Dick” Chisolm and Mary Jane McCullar Chisolm, who survives at Harding.

He was twice married. First to the former Constance Smith, who survives at Springfield, Mass. Second, on Sept. 29, 1995, at Harding, he was married to Mattie Oglivia Chisolm, who survives at Philippi.

Also surviving are one stepson, James Daniel Canty of Parkersburg; two stepdaughters, Angela Michelle Hatcher and husband, Timothy, of Parkersburg and Sherry Renee Mitchell of Elkins; three brothers, Henry Clinton Chisolm and wife, Jennifer, of Farmington, George Edward Chisolm and wife, Marlene, Phoenix, Ariz., and Robert Elliott Chisolm and wife, Anita, of Harding; one sister, Barbara Ellen Tyson and husband, Harold, of Snowshoe; eight stepgrandchildren, one stepgreat-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was one sister, Jo Ann Chisolm.

He attended the Riverside School of Elkins and Coalton High School. He had worked for the Kelley Foundry of Elkins, the Firestone Tire Co. of Massachusetts, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Co. at Connecticut, United Parcel Service of Elkins and was a Coal Miner for 28 years at the Consol Robinson Run No. 95. He was a member of the Mine Rescue team for 26 years and was a life member of BASS and the North American Hunting Club. He was a Corvette enthusiast, was a member of the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge at Fairmont and was a member and trustee of the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Willard Thomas Church Sr., 94, died at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007.

He was born Sept. 13, 1912, the son of the late Enoch and Maude Adams Church.

He is survived by his wife, Delores Fisher Church of Files Creek Road and his children, Andy Piercy and wife, Betty, of Alcoa, Tenn., Willard Church Jr. of Elkins, Joyce Church of Elkins, Candace Church and husband, Ken Miller, of Des Plaines, Ill., Ann Church and Gerald Church both of Beverly and Wade Church of Aurora, Colo. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Michael Piercy of Alcoa, Tenn., Joshua Piercy and wife, Emily, of Alcoa, Tenn., and Adam Miller of De Plaines, Ill.

Also preceding him in death were one brother and three sisters, Daniel C. Church, Ruth Channel, Elsie McDaniels and Kathleen Hanifan.

He was a graduate of Beverly High School and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Church worked as a heavy equipment operator and a sawmill operator.

Mary L. Cline

Mary L. Cline, a resident of Santa Maria since 1960, passed away at home on Nov. 30, 2007.

Mary was born in Elkins on Oct. 17, 1909.

She graduated from Davis & Elkins College in 1930 and taught sixth grade at First and Third Ward schools and English at Elkins High School where she was a librarian.

Mary married William Howard Cline (1908-1988) of Elkins in 1933.

She had three children, Mary Sue Asaidali, William H. Cline Jr. and Sandra J. Pedersen. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, David and Mark Asaidali, Mina Fisher, Maria Woodard, Cathy Boren, Stacy Budrean, Sharon Suchecki and Jay Pedersen; and nine great-grandchildren, Victoria, Christina, Keri, Arielle, Quiante, Megan, Tyrone, Brennan and Cole.

Mary was also a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1960. She was a kind and gentle soul and a good wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. at Santa Maria Cemetery with Dr. Brian Parcel of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Ollie Jane Clutter, a resident of Webster Springs, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Webster County Memorial Hospital in Webster Springs following a brief illness.

She was born at Webster Springs, a daughter of the late W. Ray Pritt and Carmel Lee (Arthur) Pritt.

She was married to John Clutter, who survives at Webster Springs. Also surviving are special friends, Gloria Gregory and Linda Meyers, both of Webster Springs.

Mrs. Clutter was a registered nurse and retired from Webster Memorial Hospital with 31 years of service. She had worked at Duke University Hospital for a short time, was formerly employed as a Webster County health nurse and a was a former teacher. She was a member of the Fountain of Life Church in Bolair. She also loved to read.

Mary was born Sunday, July 3, 1932, at Monivea, County Galway, Ireland, a daughter of the late Delia Cooke and Barthalemeau Cooke.

While attending nursing school at Saint Stephen’s Hospital at London England, she met Ira J. Coberly who was stationed there with the U.S. Navy. Accompanying Ira to the United States, the couple married on Dec. 20, 1957, at Norfolk, Va. They were stationed in several locations before returning to Elkins in 1966 where they had resided since. They were to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 20.

Surviving Mary besides her husband, Ira, are two sons, David Coberly and wife, Leigh, and Colin Coberly and wife, Jennifer Gulling; one daughter, Delia Loftis and her husband, John; and six grandchildren, Elise, Claire, Tyler, Bailey, Blake and Callie.

Preceding her in death were her five brothers, John Joe, Vincent, Jim, Oliver and Padraig Cooke. Mary, a native of Ireland, was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She had attended school in Ireland, was a nurse at Davis Memorial Hospital and was employed by Dr. N. Santra for approximately 24 and a half years retiring in 2002. She continued in the health care profession as a volunteer with the Ladies’ Auxiliary at Davis Memorial Hospital. She was dedicated to her faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. She was an active member of Holy Rosary Guild and the Choir of Saint Brendan Church. Through all times, Mary truly gave her heart and soul to all of us. She was truly loved by her friends and her family and words cannot describe how much she will be missed.

Monzo Coberly, 69, of Buckhannon, died Friday, April 13, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.

He was born June 28, 1937, at Queens, a son of Charles and Eula Snyder Coberly.

He was united in marriage, on Jan. 19, 1962, to Lela Cutright Coberly, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Rick Coberly of Buckhannon and Michael and wife, Kathy Coberly, of Athens, Ala.; one daughter Vicki Coberly of Live Oak, Fla.; five grandchildren, Christine, Joshua, Beverly, Tyler and Corey Coberly; and one sister, Rena Smith and husband, James, of Fishing Camp.

He was preceded in death by his mother, four children and his stepfather, Harold Dorsey.

Mr. Coberly worked as a miner and was employed by J.D. Hinkle Rail Yard and Union Drilling.

Opal E. Coberly, 88, a resident of Century, died Friday, June 15, 2007, in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Buckhannon.

She was born Aug. 24, 1918, at Czar, a daughter of the late Boyd Willis Herron and Pearl Ellen Loudin Herron.

On May 5, 1934, she was married to Burley T. Coberly, who preceded her in death March 29, 1981.

Surviving are one daughter, Lena (Coberly) Cook and husband, Frank, of Midlothian, Texas; two sons, Clarence L. Coberly and wife, Pauline, of Felton, Del., and Burley G. Coberly and wife, Pat, of Buckhannon; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Dessie Harris of Buckhannon; four brothers, Leonard Herron of Buckhannon, Lester Herron of Ashtubla, Ohio, Roy Herron of Ivanhoe, Va., and Elmer Laurial Herron of Spartansburg, Pa.

Also preceding her in death was one daughter, Helen (Coberly) Ancel and husband, Frank; one sister and four brothers.

She was a homemaker, member of Turkey Run Community Church and attended Century Community Church.

Retired U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. John I. Coe, 79, died June 5, 2007, at Bellevue, Neb.

He was the son of Adam and Irene Coe, formerly of Valley Bend.

Mrs. Alma Marie Zinn Coffman, 79, a resident of Laurel Mountain Road, Belington, departed this life at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, May 17, 2007, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins. She had been in declining health for the past several months.

She was born Nov. 8, 1927, at Clarksburg, the daughter of the late Claude E. “Joe” Zinn and Leona Marie Cross Zinn. On July 5, 1946, she was united in marriage to Robert Lewis “Bob” Coffman, who preceded her in death earlier this month due to an automobile accident.

Mrs. Coffman is survived by two sons, Rod Coffman and wife, Melissa Staggs, of Worthington, Ohio, and David Lewis Coffman and wife, Sheryl, of Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; three grandsons, Kevin, Stephen and Mitchell Coffman all of Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; and one brother-in-law, Charles Edward Coffman of Clearwater, Fla.

She was a graduate of Washington Irving High School, was a homemaker and a Protestant.

Alma was a devoted wife and mother. She kept a beautiful home where all felt welcome. Her cooking and quilting were exceptional. Her love for her family was endless, selfless and unconditional.

Mr. Robert Lewis “Bob” Coffman, 83, a resident of Laurel Mountain Road, Belington, departed this life Saturday morning, May 5, 2007, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Belington.

He was born Feb. 11, 1924, at Clarksburg, a son of the late Robert and Lillian Coffman.

He was united in marriage July 5, 1946, to the former Alma Marie Zinn, who survives at their home.

Mr. Coffman is survived by two sons, Rod Coffman and wife, Melissa Staggs, of Worthington, Ohio, and David Lewis Coffman and wife, Sheryl, of Raleigh-Durham, N.C; three grandsons, Kevin, Stephen and Mitchell Coffman; and one brother, Charles Edward Coffman of Clearwater, Fla.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Eugene Coffman.

Mr. Coffman was a graduate of Washington Irving High School and West Virginia University with a degree in business. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II in the European Theatre. He was employed as an accountant for Allegheny Ludlum Steel of Pittsburgh from which he retired in 1982. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 125 AF & AM of Belington, Laurel Mountain Post 410 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, an avid fisherman and a Protestant.

Friends will be received from Talbott Funeral Home 210 Brandenburg St., Belington, on Tuesday, May 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 am. Ruth S. Coffman

Miss Ruth Serpell Coffman, 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007, in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center following an extended illness. Her last few years were spent at the Convalescent Center where she enjoyed the expert care of the very able staff.

She was born July 25, 1927, at Elkins, a daughter of the late George Henry Coffman and the late Ruth Serpell Coffman. Surviving are a brother, George Coffman and wife, Martha; and nephews, John H. Coffman and wife, Pamela, and William S. Coffman and wife, Emely, all of Greenville, N.C. Three great-nephews and one great-niece also survive along with her favorite first cousin, Jean Serpell Stumbo of Pebble Beach, Calif.

Miss Coffman was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkins, which she greatly enjoyed during her active years. She attended schools in Elkins and Orlando, Fla., and graduated from Elkins High School in 1948 and attended Davis & Elkins College. She enjoyed time spent with the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, John Hart Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution, Huguenot and 1812 Societies of West Virginia as well as the ARK and the Dove Society.

There will be no local memorial service. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C., with the Rev. Linda Kaufman officiating. Betty J. Cole

Betty June Cole, 54, of Lost Creek, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, at her home in Lost Creek.

She was born Sept. 19, 1953, at Volga, a daughter of the late Junior A. Nutter and Lora Radcliff Nutter Simons and husband, Joe, of Volga.

On Feb. 14, 2001, she married Timothy Cole, who survives at Lost Creek.

Also surviving are two sons, Russell Carpenter and wife, Kim, of Clarksburg and William Carpenter and wife, Jessica, of Washington; one granddaughter, Izabela Carpenter of Washington; two sisters, Elma Queen and husband, Vaden, and Ellen Beckner and husband, David, all of Buckhannon; two brothers, Wayne Nutter of Volga and Bill Nutter and wife, Melody, of Johnstown; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a housewife, a quilt maker and attended Chapel of Grace in Quiet Dell.

Richard “Dick” Charles Cole, 77, of Elkins, formerly of Hurricane, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at home after an extended illness.

He was born at Sharon, Pa., and raised in South Charleston and worked for Union Carbide Corp. until his retirement.

He is survived by one daughter, Catherine Cole of Elkins; sons, Scott and Steven Cole, both of Hurricane; grandchildren, Brianna, Jeremy, Joshua and Matthew; and great-grandson, Brandon.

Herman Dewey Coleman, 85, of Lewisburg, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, at Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home in Fairlea.

Mr. Coleman was born June 27, 1921, at Bentree, the son of the late Lloyd Russell and Danieth Ellen Legg Coleman.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Virginia Dell Lusk Coleman; one daughter, Virginia Louise Coleman of Lewisburg; four sons, Lloyd Whitton Coleman and wife, Jane, of Green Bank, Patrick Wayne Coleman of Green Bank, Danny Gary Coleman and wife, Helen B., of Green Bank, and Michael Douglas Coleman and wife, Diane, of Fairfax Station, Va.; one sister, Danieth Ruth Patton of Florida; one brother, Ralph Claude Coleman of Green Bank; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Coleman was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell Lloyd, Andrew Scott and Wesley Earl Coleman.

Mr. Coleman was a retired carpenter with NARO. He was a member of IOOF and a World War II Army veteran. He was a Methodist by faith.

Mrs. Thelma V. Coleman, 93, of Harrisonburg, Va., and former resident of New Market, Va., slipped quietly into Jesus’ arms on Saturday morning, June 30, 2007, while visiting special friends in West Virginia.

She was born Nov. 18, 1913, at Harrisonburg, Va., the daughter of the late Harry and Maude Higgins.

Mrs. Coleman was employed for 33 years at Metro Pants in Harrisonburg, Va. She was a volunteer worker at Prince Rotary Senior Center in Harrisonburg, Va. Her friends there and being able to serve were some of the greatest joys of her life. She was a member of Believer’s Fellowship Church in Montrose.

Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Everett L. “Red” Coleman, on June 15, 2000. Also deceased are a son, Thomas Finchum Jr.; and a granddaughter, Michelle Coleman.

She is survived by four sons, Rusty Coleman of Timberville, Va., Robert Coleman and companion, Debby Clower, of Harrisonburg, Va., Everett L. Coleman Jr. and wife, Terry, of Okachobee, Fla., and Tim Coleman Sr. of McLeansboro, Ill.; two daughters, Darlene Raines of New Market, Va., and Sue Claypool and husband, Joe, of Harrisonburg, Va.; 16 grandchildren, Cheryl, Jackie, Bobby, Crissy, Angie, Eric, Travis, Chad, Nickie, Christy, Ashley, Joey, Jennifer, Paul, Nicholas and Daniel; and 19 great-grandchildren, Davy, Meg, Tayler, Torry, Hallie, McKayla, Keelin, Alley, Jericho, Andra, Jacob, Gage, Kyle, Skylar, Joseph, Dana, Jerralee, Austin and Madison.

Nanny loved her family, her friends and her God with a passion. We will miss her terribly.

Mary Ann Collett, 65, died Friday, March 16, 2007, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.

Mrs. Collett was born Nov. 24, 1941, at Upper Tract, the daughter of the late John and Lacy (Kimble) Ratcliffe.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Joe and June Ratcliffe.

Mary worked at Wampler Foods in Harrisonburg as a grader for more than 27 years.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Dorsey Collett; one son, Robert Collett; two daughters, Joyce Collett and Louise Hummel and her husband, Roy, all of Harrisonburg, Va.; one sister, Shirley Champ of Upper Tract; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pastor Tony Martin will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, Va. The burial will be private.

Philip T. Collett

Philip Thomas “Tommy” Collett, 71, of East Dailey, passed away Thursday evening, December 20, 2007 in the Emergency Department of Davis Memorial Hospital. He had been in declining health since having surgery for bladder cancer in August of 2007.

Tommy was born May 24, 1936, at East Dailey, a son of the late Glen R. Collett and Evelyn Stokes Collett. He was never married and resided in East Dailey under the care of his sister, Janet Swecker.

Also surviving are one brother, Ray Collett and wife, Lorena, of East Dailey; three sisters, Eileen Price of East Dailey, Deloris Kerns of Columbia, S.C., and Janet Swecker of East Dailey. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceding him in death was one brother, Glen Collett Jr.; three brothers-in-law, C.J. “Gabby” Price, Delbert Kerns and Tom Swecker; a niece, Mary K. Hamrick; a nephew, Ronald “Ronnie” Price; and a special grandnephew, Mikie Price.

Tommy was one of God’s special children who was born with a handicap. He loved people, and never met a stranger — always ready to talk to everyone. He looked forward to getting the daily paper and having someone read it to him. He loved to ride his riding mower. Until last summer, he mowed the field near his home. When anyone came to visit, he would always take them to the garage to show them his tractor.

Tommy worked at Coastal Lumber Co. for 20 years until his retirement in 1981. He was a 20-year member of the Elkins Eagles Club and a member of the Tygart Valley Fire Department.

Friends may call on Sunday, Dec. 23, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Margaret “Peg” Mae Collette, 54, a resident of Route 4, Philippi, and a former resident of Route 1, Hambleton, passed away Friday, June 22, 2007, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 20, 1952, at Parsons, a daughter of Dorothy (Pennington) Winkler of Philippi and the late Luther Winkler of Philippi.

She was united in marriage Oct. 21, 1972, to Moody Eldridge Collette, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, William Keith Collette of Parsons and Jacob Lee and wife, Regina Collette, of Philippi; two sisters, Linda and husband, the Rev. Pat Cassidy, of St. George and Ruth and husband, Steve Marks, of Liberty, N.C.; two grandchildren, Hannah Nicole and Preston James Collette of Philippi; three nephews, Steven Craig and wife, Tammy Marks, of Mt. Sterling, Ky., Charles and wife, Susan Marks, of Parsons and Charles and wife, Madeline Arnold, of Hendricks.

Peg worked as CFO at Appalachian Mental Health in Elkins. She also worked at Sharpe Hospital as assistant administrator and CFO and also at St. George Medical Clinic as CEO. Peg was a member of Overfield Community Church, was past member of River City Garden Club, was past member of Tucker Community Endowment Foundation board of directors and was a past member of the Governor’s Community Action Board. Peg received an award as one of the outstanding young woman of America in 1987. Peg received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Fairmont State College and master’s in business administration from Wesleyan College.

She was born Friday, July 5, 1946, at Monterville, a daughter of the late Sherman Morris Riggleman and Betty Calain Riggleman.

On March 8, 1965, at Mingo, she was married to John Randall Collier, who survives. They had celebrated 42 years of marriage.

Also surviving are two sons, James R. Collier and fiancé, Julie Koontz, of Brandywine and John Andrew Collier and fiancé, Lorie Rader, of Mill Creek; one daughter, Penny McKenzie and husband, Andrew, Springdale, Ark.; one brother, Bill Riggleman and wife, Jane, of Monterville; two sisters, Georgia Lamoreaux and husband, Louis, of Monterville and Sharon Shiflett and husband, Chris, of Virginia; and seven grandchildren, Randall Collier, Jessica Collier, Cole Collier, Josey Collier, Kaitlin McKenzie, Colin McKenzie and Ashley Collier.

Preceding her in death was one grandson, Trenton Rader Collier.

Faye was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School. She was a homemaker, an excellent cook, a loving wife and a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a Protestant by faith.

Daniel David Collins, 30, passed away early Wednesday, March 14, 2007, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born March 12, 1977, at Lexington, Ky., a son of David M. Collins and Rebecca J. Mason Collins of Elkins. Also surviving are his wife, Holly J. Haupin Collins, and two daughters, Haley Marie and Hannah Hope Collins, all of Weston. One brother, Gabriel Michael Collins and wife, Jesse, of Hurricane; two sisters, Rachel Hope Collins McCart and husband, Ryan, of Oceanside, Calif., and Cindy Sue Collins Harris of Elkins; his paternal grandmother, Ella M. Collins of Elkins; and several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins also survive.

Preceding him in death was his paternal grandfather, Paul D. Collins; and maternal grandparents, Robert L Mason and June R. Reynolds Mason.

Daniel attended Elkins High School and graduated from the West Virginia Mountain Challenge Academy in 1995. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, attended Middle Georgia Technical Institute and received an associate degree in aircraft structural technology. Daniel was employed by Rest Care Inc. in Clarksburg, but really found his fulfillment in carpentry. He performed “ handyman” jobs for people and helped restore the community of Berlin, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He dearly loved his family, and his two little girls were the joy of his life.
