Scottie and Jim Patric, Former Elkins Residents,
Die in Car Accident
If there was one thing former Elkins residents Scottie and Jim Patric
enjoyed in life, it was a road trip to visit family and friends. Always vigorous
and ready for adventure, the native New Englanders criss-crossed the United
States at least a dozen times. Their East Coast jaunts from Canada to Florida
were legend among those who welcomed them on both sides of the family.
Family members believe perhaps it was fitting that while doing what they loved
June 3, the couple met the road’s end near Saranac Lake in the Adirondaks.
They were on an extended trip visiting relatives in the Northeast when they
collided with a pick-up truck. It was the day before their 55th wedding
anniversary.
According to a New York State Police Uniform and Bureau of Criminal
Investigation press release, the collision occurred on state Route 3 at 3:30
p.m. when James Patric, 82, most recently a resident of Greenville, Tenn., was
proceeding west in the eastbound lane with passenger Alma “Scottie” M.
Patric, 77.
Police said Eric H. Pellerin, 26, of Plattsburgh, N.Y., was traveling east on
state Route 3 in the eastbound lane and attempted evasive action by braking and
swerving toward the south shoulder of the road. The two vehicles collided head
on, police reported.
Life-saving measures were attempted by New York State Police and members of the
Saranac Lake and Bloomingdale Fire Department, but all three victims died at the
scene. The investigation is ongoing.
The Patrics resided in Elkins from 1967 to 1980. It was Jim Patric’s
distinguished career with the U.S. Forest Service that brought the family to
West Virginia. For years, he was project leader at the Fernow Experimental
Forest and the Timber and Watershed Laboratory in Parsons. He was considered a
world expert in forest hydrology and soil erosion and was called upon several
times to testify before U.S. congressional committees. He authored more than 100
scholarly articles in his field and taught forestry at Davis & Elkins
College and the University of Tennessee.
His steady climb up the Forest Service ranks led the family on an extended tour
of the United States, from his native Connecticut to California, North Carolina,
Alaska and West Virginia.
Scottie Patric was a housewife and mother of four children: Jim, Ellen, Robin
and John. Known for her soprano voice, Scottie sang with community and church
choirs throughout her life, starting in her childhood in Pelham, N.H.
Scottie was also a cook and baker, who enjoyed crocheting afghans for those she
loved.
After Parsons, Jim was promoted to an administrative post in Washington, D.C.,
and in 1981, the couple retired to Greeneville, Tenn., where they lived for the
last 24 years.
Jim had recently authored an autobiographical memoir of World War II, “To War
in a Tin Can,” an account of his experiences aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer. He
was also a veteran of the Korean War. Before and after the wars, he earned a
bachelor’s degree in forestry at the University of Connecticut and a
master’s degree in silviculture at Harvard.
The couple met in Rockville, Conn., through a mutual friend. Jim often recalled
their first date, swimming at a nearby reservoir.
The two were married June 4, 1950, in Lowell, Mass., and honeymooned in Lake
Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Fifty years later, they returned to the lake for
a golden anniversary celebration hosted by their children.
The couple is survived by all of their children: Jim Patric of Monterey, Calif.,
Ellen Patric-Spears of Elkins, Robin Patric of Whitehouse Station, N.J., and
John Patric of Morris Plains, N.J. There are also seven grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at Ladd Funeral Home in
Vernon, Conn. The ashes will be buried in Ellington Cemetery in Ellington, Conn.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in the memory of Scottie and
Jim Patric be made to the Greeneville Adventist Academy, Greeneville Seventh Day
Adventist Church, 710 Asheville Highway, Greeneville, Tenn. 37743. From 8
Jun 2005.
