I am seeking info on the PETRY ( I am not sure of the spelling, could be PETTREY or like that ) family that lived in or around the Vaughn area of 20 Mile Creek. I am looking for one Petry in particular. I don't have a first name but I do know he lived in the Vaughn area around the early 1940's. He had family there and about 1943 was seeing a TRUMAN girl that lived in the area also. Sometime after 1945? he moved to Beckley and had a job as foreman or manager of a coal mine there. If anyone has any info on him or his family, I would greatly appreciate it.

EDWARD (NED) HUGHES I am writing a book on Edward ( Ned) HUGHES b. ca 1767 d. 1839 m. 18 Oct. 1793 Nancy Foster b. 19 Feb. 1774.Lived in Kanawha and Nicholas Co., WV. I have fare records on his ancestors from son Madison to present. Willing to share all! I am attempting to clarify or find his father and grandfather. 1. An unknown source I have lists his father as Thomas Hughes b. 1740 d. 1793 m. Elizabeth (unknown) b. 1744 d. aft. May 1793. This takes me nowhere. 2. Don Norman (Hacker's Ck. Pioneer Desc.) (his site is temp. down) lists Ned as son of Thomas and Susannah Hughes. Thomas' first wife was Mary Baker. Thomas is reported as son of William who died in 1767 in Hampsire Co. VA. Will probated 9 June 1767.Wife believed to be Suda or Sudrah. Thomas moved to Hampsire Co. about 1750. Lived near "Lick Branch". Moved to Harrison Co. about 1755. Settled on Hackers Creek about 1773. Listed children: Sudna Sarah Jesse (famous indian fighter) Thomas Jr. Elias(Ellis) James Martha Charles Deborah Job Edward (my NED) 3. Ruth Cornell says Thomas had 3 wives. Elizabeth _______, Jane (Jean ) Hughes, Nellie Foster Children of Thomas: William (wife Mary foster) Robert Elizabeth (husband Abraham Jarrett) Edward ( my NED) Susanna ( husband James Reynolds) George Hughes (wife Margaret Johnston) Nancy Hughes (husband John Campbell) Thomas Jr. This man's will (22 May, 1793) lists only Thomas, Edward and Robert as sons. Have you been able to follow any of these lines? Would you venture any theories on who Neds parents are? Any aid would be appreciated. . --------------------------------------------------

We are seeking information on the CONTE and NELSON family, which lived in Nicholas County, WV., sometime between the 1910s and the 1920s. Specific individuals we're seeking information on are capitalized. SILVIO BRUNO CONTE, SR. (nicknamed "Sam") was born on the island of Ponza, Italy, on October 23, 1894. His parents were CAMILLO CONTE (b. about 1875 in Italy?) And FRANCIS SCOTTI (b. about 1875 in Italy?). After emigrating to the USA (between 1910-1912), sometime between 1918 and 1920 he became a coal miner, and married BERTHA NELSON (b. between 1893 and 1900 in Ireland). They had four children in the areas of Richwood, Mallory, and Huntington, West Virginia: 1) LUCILLE AMELIA CONTE, b. 1920. 2) HAROLD "Red" CONTE, b. 1921. 3) JOSEPH BENJAMIN CONTE, b. 1923. 4) FRANCES CONTE, b. 1925. Bertha died between 1925 and 1927, perhaps in WV or PA. We do not know her parents' names or where she was born in Ireland. But we are desperate to learn anything we can about her! Sometime in the late 1920s, Silvio Sr. then married his 2nd wife, DULCIE ELIZABETH WALKUP, who was born on March 25, 1907 in Renick (Greenbriar County), WV. Together Silvio and Dulcie had 8 children (perhaps in or around the areas of Richwood, West Virginia and/or Ellsworth, Pennsylvania): 1) MARY GILDA CONTE, b. November 1925. 2) AMELIA CONTE, born in Richwood, WV, perhaps in the late 1920s. 3) AUGUSTINO CONTE. 4) DAVID CONTE. 5) SILVIO CONTE JR. 6) EUGENE CONTE. 7) JAMES CONTE. 8) DANIEL CONTE. In 1943, Silvio Sr. and Dulcie moved to the Detroit, Michigan area, where most of their children, now grown, are still living. On October 10, 1975, Silvio Sr. died in Detroit (of a heart attack). Dulcie died on August 28, 1989, in Warren, Michigan. Dulcie's parents were OSA (or OTIS?) WALKUP (b. January 28, 1874, in Greenbriar County, WV) and UNA RUCKER (b. 1884, in Greenbriar County, WV). If you have any information pertaining to any of the above individuals (even if you're not related), please contact us. We would very much like to complete our family tree and connect with relatives. . --------------------------------------------------

I am interested in locating information about the H.C. PERKINS FAMILY (children Clark and Clarance) and the family of Mary Ellen NUTTER who were my great grandparents. Their sons, Rev. Clark Chambers PERKINS DOB 10-18-18763 and brother Clarence PERKINS were raised on the family home farm in Nicholas Co. Their father was H.C. (actual name unknown) PERKINS and their mother was Mary Ellen NUTTER. Clark and Charence Perkins attended schools in Nicholas County and Summersville Normal. Clark went on to become a Methodist Minister, married Lily B. DYE and retired in Charleston, WVA after 50 years in the church. Clarence moved to Gassaway, WVA. (see notes below) CLarence Perkins taught in Nicholas County schools before moving to Gassaway and opening a business. He was later appointed postmaster of Gassaway in 1916 and served one term as mayor. (See FamilyTreeMaker.com Desendants of Michael Criss vii. Bessie CRISS) Clarence married Bessie Criss from Braxton Co. WVA on 9-12- 1906 according to notes included in The History of WVA, Old and New published in 1923, The American Historical Society Chicago and New Your, Vol. III, page 2796 - Nicholas County. CHAPMAN, Sr. is s/o Jacob Chapman b. 1755 m. to Margaret BURNS. Any information you may have on these two families would be great.

My mother was the daughter of Fred BENNETT and Mollie PERRY. The Perry's were from Craigsville and lived just down from the Alderson church. Bessie and Water Perry lived in a little house along the river and I can remember,as a child, visiting there often. I am searching for land records of the Perry family that would probably go back to Sandford Bundy Perry. My mother was left a small piece of land but I don't know by who, and that piece of land ( about 5 acres) was sold to Walter Perry in 1944. This site was purchased in 1842 by the church, and later owned in the 1950's by Walter Gray. After the Civil War, a new site for the ME Camp Ground was located on Laurel Creek near the 1954 residence of John Bennett. This latter site was used up to the 1870s. Does anyone know whether the Bethel Methodist church was a ME church or a ME South church after the Methodists split in 1845? . --------------------------------------------------

Hello, I am trying to find out how my family ended up with the last name of LANG. What I know is: My GGrandfather was Carl Guy LANG(born in 1892/93 in West Virginia). The majority of his immediate decendents were born and/or buried in Nicholas County. Carl Guy's mother was Elizabeth PERKINS. Carl Guy was illigitimate -- with his mother never revealing who his father was. However... Carl Guy was given the surname of LANG (which Elizabeth never used). We have only one possible "family story" lead. Apparently there was a Nelson LANG who owned/ran Weirton Steel. This is the only clue I have as to the possible origin. I can find no other LANG surnames in the area. Other information (just in case it is helpful): Carl Guy married Bessie ARMENTROUT in approximately 1910 (she died in 1937 and is buried in Blacks Chapel Cemetary in Nicholas County) and had Roy Lew LANG. Bessie was the daughter of Lorenzo Jerdan and Virgina Elizabeth ARMENTROUT. After Bessie's death, Carl Guy married Lucy TETER (approximate marriage date 1939). These families lived in the Nicholas County area. Carl Guy LANG died approximately 1976. He died in Stuebenville, OH while living in a nursing home. If you can be of any help, I would be appreciative. Aside from the obvious brick wall (which can never be torn down) -- it is pretty strange to have the last name of some unknown, unrevealed person. Thank you very much. . --------------------------------------------------

Malinda married Mr. LONG several years later. Now here is my problem, John's death certificate shows that his father was Dock LONG, and that he was born at Meadow Bluff, West Virginia. The funeral home which handled him shows that his father was James LONG. So who the heck was he and his father. Can anyone help us?

My great grandfather Andrew Jackson MULLINS and his wife Ollie STANLEY MULLINS moved from Greenbrier Co. when my grandmother was about 4 years old in 1910. He cared for the cemetery around that time and the home they lived in was right in what would be part of the cemetery now. Jack and Ollie MULLINS also cleaned the Presbteryian church on Main St. Jack's brother William MULLINS also lived in Richwood. Are there any early church photos of members or Sunday School photos that they might be in. This would probably been circa 1910-1918. Would appreciate any information or photos anyone could send.

I'm going to be making a trip to Summersville in Nicholas County in about a month to do genealogy research. Can someone tell me if the Nicholas County Historical and Genealogy Society building is still open to the public. We were there two years ago, in the fall, and it was closed due to not having heat in the building. I would like to spend a day there. The last time we were in Summersville a very nice lady picked us up and took us to the building and stayed with us in the cold. She was really nice to strangers. Also, is it possible to go to the Hughes Cemetery, located in Twenty Mile area. They were doing some sort of excavation in that area and we were not able to get to the cemetery last time. . --------------------------------------------------

Some of the info that I have may be a little off and more children born there. Can someone help me to find Serena's birth certificate.
