The University of Washington Suzzallo-Allen Library ought to be viewed as complementary to Seattle Public Library for genealogists. There may be as much material of genealogical value at the UW as at SPL, but the UW libraries are not organized for the benefit of genealogists. We need to learn to use the electronic catalog effectively. The UW has special collections of Pacific Northwest (including Alaska, BC, Yukon, Northwest Territories), Scandinavian, Jewish, Asian, and Women Studies. The UW has useful historical/genealogical periodicals for various parts of the US that are not found elsewhere in this region's libraries. The UW is the repository for the Swedish Emigrant Institute's collection of microfilm for Swedish-American churches of the Pacific Northwest. The UW exceeds the amount of material available in SPL for European genealogical research and contains many resources for the Eastern US that are not available at SPL. The religion collection is of special interest to genealogists. It is necessary to go to both Dewey Decimal floors and Library of Congress floors to find all of any subject. The older history and religion materials in particular have not been re-classified yet to Library of Congress.
