The Organization



      The founding of the Ira (VT) Baptist church extends back into Colonial days before Vermont was organized as a State, by the adoption of its present Constitution and before the adoption of the United States Constitution. 

      Lord Cornwallis had surrendered at Yorktown, Va, in 1781, which practically closed the Revolutionary War, but it was not until May 1787 that the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia.  This great national document was signed September 17, 1787, and adopted by the various colonies about a year later and the new government went into operation March 4, 1789, with George Washington as the first president.  Vermont was received into the Union in 1790. 

      Founded as it was in these early times, there appears to have been no "Act of Incorporation" of this church, as required by the laws of all the states in our times, nor was there a board of trustees elected to hold any property that might accrue, in the possession of the Church, and by whose successors in office such property would be held from generation to generation.  From these facts it is clearly evident that the business of the church has always been done in an unusual manner and all property held in a manner peculiar to this Church, as will be seen, as these reminiscences are recorded herein. 

      There is reason to believe that there were several families of Baptist persuasion who settled within the present limits of the Town of Ira before the organization of the Town in 1779, which went by the name of "District of Ira" for a number of years thereafter. 

      The Founder of the Church appears to have been Rev. Thomas SKEELS, who had preached in this part of the state and in this town occasionally, and who in 
1783, gathered together a little company of believers and formed a Church, he being elected pastor, Cephas CARPENTER, clerk; and Reubin BAKER, Deacon. From the records of the times, it is now impossible to determine just how many and who would be considered "Charter members" as churches are now organized, but the membership list shows forty-two members received during the first three years, 1783-1785.

      When the Shaftsbury Association met with the Ira Church August 27, 1913, some other interesting details were incorporated in the Church letter read before the Association and afterward published in the Association minutes for that year.  The following extract from this letter written at the time by Deacon S.L. PECK, is too valuable to be changed in any way or committed: 
 
 


  "More and more as the years go by, the tendency to anniversary ideas seem to be growing among all organizations, of any importance whether political, fraternal, military or religious, and ours seems to be no exception to the general rule. 

      The smoke from the battlefields of Hubbardton, Bennington and Saratoga had scarcely died away the war whoop of the savage still echoed amid the mountains and along our lake shores, the stealthy tread of the wild animals of the forest and the more stealthy red man disturbed these early settlers, when the Ira Baptist Church was born.  The political destinies of a great and mighty republic, was in its formative period, when the founders of this divinely directed organization took shape for the salvation of men and women and the moral betterment of the people. 

      The treaty of Paris, so-called, by which peace was once more established between the thirteen now independent colonies and Great Britain was signed Sept 3 of the same year, but the federal Constitution and the election of Washington as the First President did not take place till September 17,1787- four years after our little church was organized. 

      The Shaftsbury Church after which this association of Baptist churches was named, was organized the same year as the Ira Baptist Church, only two others, viz., the Manchester and Pownal, antedating the Ira Church as to age, ours having been organized in 1783 and under God our Church doors have never been closed to the regular observance of religious services since the close of the Revolutionary War. 

      It might be of interest to observe that upon our first Church roll appear the names of several of the officers and men who belonged to the Continental Army and at the expiration of their term of service, migrated to the then wilderness of this pleasant valley, and built for themselves homes in the forest, but did not neglect to build a Church home by the side of the "Little Red School House", thereby emphasizing the great imperishable fact, that education and religion should NEVER be divorced, but like twin sisters of human progress, peace and prosperity, walk contentedly hand in hand from generation to generation to the end of time. 

      The American Protestant population is rapidly shrinking and while we would not appear to be pessimistic, we are somewhat apprehensive as to what the near future may have in store for us, as a religious body; but our trust is in God and we do not fear but he will care for his own. 

      The growing business and industrial centers and the rapacious and all-devouring maw of the mighty west has called away our young people until but a handful, as it were, remains. 

      While the silent but every busy reaper takes his toll of human life, one by one, we are necessarily dependent upon and we are grateful for the kind sympathy and financial aid of those in this community whose names are not upon the Church roll, but whose sympathies we know are with us in all our efforts to uplift and bless the community. 

      We are united as a Church and have confidence in and pray for the work of our pastor".
