Thomas Carter Chapter, DAR

NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS of the AMERICAN REVOLUTION
Thomas Carter Chapter
Mount Cross, VA
VA, District III

About Us

The Thomas Carter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was organized at Mt. Cross, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, January 20, 1936, with Mrs. F. K. Perrow, Sr., as Organizing Regent.

The distinguished patriot for whom our Chapter was named was Thomas Carter, IV. He was born at "Barford," Lancaster County, on November 27, 1734, and died at "Green Rock," Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on July 15, 1817. He was the great grandson of Thomas Carter, Ist, of Barford, England, and his wife, Catherine Dale, the daughter of Major Edward Dale and his wife, Lady Diana Skipwith, daughter of Sir Henry Skipworth of Prestwould, England.

In 1760 Thomas Carter disposed of his Lancaster County, Virginia, estate and moved to Cumberland County, to land inherited from his father, Thomas Carter, III. There he married Winifred Hobson, eldest daughter of Adcock Hobson and his wife, Joan Lawson.

Thomas Carter, IV, assisted in establishing American Independence. He enlisted March 10, 1777, for three years as a private in Captain John Dandridge's Company, 1st Artillery Regiment, Continental Line, under Colonel Charles Harrison, and was assigned to service in the State of Virginia.

In the spirit of restlessness which was driving men westward, Thomas Carter moved again, bringing his family and household goods to Pittsylvania County, VA, where in 1783 he purchased a plantation, which he called "Green Rock." In 1797, 1798, and 1802, Thomas Carter had grants for 1,193 more acres of land in Pittsylvania County.
