TIME and PLACE: All Membership meetings are scheduled for 7:00 PM at the Surry County Recreation Center, unless otherwise noted. Board meetings will be held in The Society's new home on Bank Street in Surry.

Membership meetings are USUALLY held at 7:00 PM on the second Monday of March, May, September and December at the Surry Recreation Center, on Route 10 just west of the intersection of Routes 10 and 31. For directions, e-mail Eve Gregory.

December 2005 Meeting Notice

The December 2005 meeting was held Monday, December 12, 2005, at 7:00 P. M. at the Surry County Va. Recreation Center.

Our Speaker was Mr. Chris Calkins of Petersburg, Virginia.

September 2005 Meeting Notice
The September 2005 meeting was held Monday, September 12, 2005, at 7:00 P. M. at the Surry County Va. Recreation Center.

Our Speaker was Mr. Robert Woollard. He was a crew member of Godspeed's voyage from London, England, in 1985. This was the second replica of the Godspeed built here. It was 67 feet long at the waterline. The hull was built at Jamestown and outfitted at the Newport News Shipyard. It was shipped to London, England, and after grand ceremonies including those with Prince Philip, began a long and perilous trip across the Atlantic Ocean on approximately April 30, 1985.

These were great and appropriate first-hand recollections, leading into our 2007 celebration of the settling of Jamestown. Robert Woollard is a citizen of Surry County.

May 2005 Meeting Notice
The May 2005 meeting was held Monday, May 9, 2005, at 7:00 P. M. at the Surry County Va. Recreation Center.

Our Speaker was Dr. Melvin Ely, noted author and teacher.
Dr. Ely received his doctorate from Princeton in 1985. A professor at the College of William and Mary, he has recently written a highly acclaimed book, Israel on the Appomattox. This important book tells the story of free African Americans and their relations with whites and enslaved blacks 1790-1861. It is extremely relevant to Surry History. This book has won the Bancroft Prize, was named a Best Book by the Washington Post Book World and two other newspapers and designated an Editors Choice by the Atlantic Monthly.
We were fortunate to have this noted author, professor and Society member as our speaker. It was a great presentation!

March 2005 Meeting Notice
The March 2005 meeting was held Monday, March 14, 2005, at 7:00 P. M. at the Surry County Va. Recreation Center.

Our Speaker was Dorothy Grubbs.
Mrs. Grubbs, who spoke to us previously on her memories of Surry County, had developed another program on Surry, going back several generations. Her memory is phenomenal. We were fortunate to have this opportunity to learn more of our past.
