Fannie Majors

Death of an Aged Colored Woman
A few days since there died in Woodville, Rappahannock County, a remarkable colored woman,
Fannie Majors. She was born in the year 1806 and consequently was at her death ninety-nine
years old. Aunt Fannie was first owned by Mr. Samuel Dennis of Woodville, at whose death
she became the property of Mr. Jno. Dennis, who was the father of Mrs. A.W. Courtney and
Mr. Richard H. Dennis, of Culpeper. One peculiar feature connected with the life of this good old
woman was that, although she was immediately freed by Mr. Jno. Dennis on becoming his property, yet she
stayed on with the family throughout the troublous time of the Civil War remaining ever faithful to their fortunes to the end.
Those who knew her most intimately bear witness that she was possessed of a noble character,
honored and loved by all who came in contact with her, for her generous deeds of helpfulness and
her kindly words of encouragement to all, especially during the times of bloody war, to those identified with that great struggle.
Peace then, say we, to the ashes of Fannie Major, for there are few such, and those who knew her best and honor her certainly do not misplace
their confidence and esteem.
