THOMAS BURACKER Dies In Hagerstown

Thomas L. Buracker, 79, one of the old time bark peelers and potato and cabbage growers of Page, died one day last week in Hagerstown, Md., where he has been living for twenty or twenty-five years. His home for a long time was on top of the Breedlove Mountains, where he reclaimed many acres of land from their virgin state, converting the acreage into the growth of cabbage, potatoes and turnips. These each year he sold on the Luray market. He was also one of the old time bark peelers for the Deford Tanning Company of Luray. Until his last years he was phenomenal in activity for one of his age. He gave little consideration to making round trip walking trips of approximately 26 miles buying “family provisions” and reaching home by 4 o’clock in the afternoon. He was a son of the late Henry Buracker, well known in almost all the mountain sections of Luray and Marksville magisterial districts. When his bark-peeling contracts for the Deford Company expired the later Mr. Buracker would lease large acreages of mountain land in both Greene and Madison Counties carrying on a work with which he “had been brought up,” the old time “bark man,” as he classified himself, often said.

His deceased wife was the former Miss Jennie Breeden of Page County. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Keller (Ollie) Buracker, of Hagerstown, Md.; Noah and Raymond Buracker, their homes unknown; Mrs. Trenton (Lyle) Jenkins, of Martinsburg, W.Va., and George Buracker, of Hagerstown, Md. J.L. COLVIN

Colvin Once A Resident of Luray

(By J.R. Broyles)

J.L. Colvin, years ago a carpenter and cabinet maker of rare skill, residing on Dry Run, died last month at his home in Madison County at the age of 99 uears. After returning to Madison he worked steadily at his trade for a number of years. He was one of the outstanding coffin makers for parts of Madison and Culpeper counties. While working here he was employed by the old Schwartz & Woodward planing mill, a short distance east of the Page Motor Company establishment. A good many years ago Mr. Colvin was believed to be suffering from an incurbale malady. When believed to be practically dead he visited a Minnesota hospital. He returned from that hospital within two months, his friends saying "magically curied." He was never married. He was born in Culpeper County. By the time he was twelve years of age he had worked at different callings, accumulating enough money to buy a set of carpenter tools.  A considerable part of his work in Luray was coincident with the employment of George Glenn, Green Mauck, Al Flinn, Dal Slusher and other outstanding carpenters and cabinet makers. Until a few days before his death he lived alone, though neighborhood families visited him each day. One of his last requests was that he be buried as near the line between Culpeper and Madison counties as possible. His last request was carried out in its entirety. Colvin also had a brother, Joe, who was once a Luray carpenter.
