Margaret S. Estes
Margaret Louise Sprinkel Estes,
87, of Rochelle, Madison County, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at University of
Virginia Medical Center. Born July 22, 1914, in Madison County, she was a
daughter of the late Cecil Ryland Sprinkel and Nellie Lee Colvin Sprinkel. Her
husband was the late James Smith Estes. She also was preceded in death by a son,
James Smith Estes, Jr.; a son-in-law, Thomas Byrd Gore and three brothers,
Dewitt, Welford and Irvin Sprinkel.
Mrs. Estes was a member of Rochelle Christian Church, Madison Garden Club,
Montpelier Chapter of DAR, House of Burgesses’ Chapter of National Society of
Colonial Dames, National Society of Magna Charta of Dames and Barows, National
Descendants of Colonial Clergy, Madison County Welfare Board and Historical and
Heritage Society.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Anne Estes Dawson and husband, John S.
Dawson and Rebecca Lea Estes Gore, all of Rochelle; a daughter-in-law, Joyce
Taylor Estes; a brother, Randolph Graves Sprinkel and wife, Betty, of Rochelle;
two sisters, Irene Sprinkel Trimmer and husband, William, of Stanardsville and
Martha Frances Sprinkel Marquardt and husband, Bruce, of Williamsburg; 10
grandchildren, John S. Dawson III and wife, Debbie, James W. Dawson and wife,
Anastasia, Michael Leigh Dawson and wife, Carman, Mark A. Dawson, Charlotte
Denise Laurent and her husband, Phillipe, James Smith Estes III and wife, Susan,
Jenifer Joyce Ritchie and husband, Jay, Deanna Rachell Estes, Thomas William
Gore, and Margaret-Anne Rebecca Gore and fiancé, Timothy Hawley; 18
great-grandchildren; five nephews; two nieces and a special friend, Sue Ross.
A funeral service was held Wednesday at Rochelle Christian Church with interment
in church cemetery. The Rev. Ken Morton and the Rev. Larry Hastings officiated.
Pallbearers were, James W., Michael L., Mark A. and John S. Dawson III, James S.
Estes III, T. William Gore and Timothy Hawley. Honorary pallbearers were
Michael, Wayne and Brent Sprinkel, William and Sidney Trimmer and Jimmy Miller.
Memorial contributions may be made to Margaret Estes Scholarship Fund, c/o Doug
Fears, Wachovia Bank, P. O. Box 326, Madison, Virginia 22727.
Preddy Funeral Home, Madison, was in charge of arrangements.
Alice G. Lohr
Alice Gordon Lohr, 82, of
Orange, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at her residence. Born July 14, 1919, in
Syria, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Franklin Gordon and Mamie Richards
Gordon. Mrs. Lohr was retired from Stromberg-Carlson of Charlottesville and a
member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Orange. Besides her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband, Belvin L. Lohr; a brother, L. Glenn Gordon and
five brothers-in-law.
Survivors include a brother, Douglas M. Gordon of Syria; three sisters, Thelma
G. Terry of Orange, Frances G. Hicks and Ada B. Gordon, both of Syria; a number
of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service was held May 18, from Preddy Funeral Chapel, Orange, with
interment in Walker’s United Methodist Church Cemetery, Madison Mills with the
Rev. Forest Porter officiating.
Pallbearers were James W. Finks, James E. Tucker, Russell Lohr, Thomas Lohr,
Raymond Davis and Royce Hughes.
