Benjamin F. Breeden

B.F. Breeden Dies; Was A Retired Farmer

            Benjamin F. Breeden, a retired farmer of Syria, died at his home early Friday morning, January 28, after a long period of declining health.

            He was 79 years of age and was the son of the late Alexander Breeden and the late Martha Meadows Breeden of Madison county.

            He is survived by two daughters and three sons. The daughters are Mrs. Dewey Shiflett of Syria; Mrs. Bennie Brooks of Charlottesville. The sons, Andrew F., of Orange, Jessie L. of Charlottesville and William E., of Free Union.

            Also surviving are three brothers, David Breeden of Locust Grove, Gilbert of Montpelier and Luther of Winchester, 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

            The service was conducted from the Rose Park Methodist church at Wolftown by the pastor, the Rev. James L. Clements on Sunday afternonn.

            Burial was in the family section of the Rose Park cemetery...

Mrs. Ada Salome Dodson

            Mrs. Ada S. Dodson, wife of Lloyd Dodson, of Nethers, died at her home Monday, July 20...

            Born and reared in Culpeper county, she was 79 years old, and the daughter of the late William Hawkins and Bertie Sullivan Hawkins.

            Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Wayman, Laurel Mills, Lloyd Jr., of Berryville, and Charles Dodson of Nethers; two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Weakley, Amissville, and Miss Emma Dodson of Nethers; two brothers, Luther and William Hawkins of Culpeper; also 23 grandchildren.

            The Rev. J.T. Cassell conducted services at her home Tuesday, July 21. She was a member of the Bethlehem Methodist church.

            Burial was in the family section of Etlan Methodist cemetery with the Geest Funeral Parlors in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lula Dodson

Mrs. Melvin Dodson

            Mrs. Lula Dodson, wife of Mr. Melvin Dodson, of Nethers, died June 15, 1930, at 4:30 p.m. at the University hospital, Charlottesville. She underwent operations for appendicitis and gall stones, but pneumonia caused her death.

            The deceased was a daughter of Michael and Millie Nicholson, of Rappahannock county, and 45 years old. Besides her husband and children, she leaves a number of relatives.

            The burial was at home.                                                                                             

Mrs. Julia Jenkins

MRS. JULIA A. JENKINS

            Mrs. Julia A. Jenkins, widow of the late James Noah Jenkins of Etlan, died at the residence of her Mrs. Reuben Ashby Jenkins, of Etlan on Sunday night, November 28th, after a lingering illness.

            She was in the 88th year of her age and was the daughter of the late James W. Butler and the late Jane Cubbage Butler of Madison county. She has been a widow for nearly 17 years and has been residing with her only son, Reuben Ashby Jenkins, following her husband's death.

            Besides her son, she leaves 11 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchildren and one great grandchild.

            Since she has been a member for many years of the Bethlehem Methodist church at Nethers, the services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. J.L. Clements... The interment was held in the family section of the Etlan Methodist cemetery...

Thomas Jenkins, Age 81 Dies At Nethers Home

            Mr. Thomas Jenkins, age 81 years, and a well known and highly respected citizen of Nethers, Madison County, died at his home in Nethers on Saturday night, July 17th, after an illness of about nine months.

            He was the son of the late Joseph Jenkins and the late Sarah Jenkins of Madison County and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Jones Jenkins. There were no children.

            He was a member of the Bethlehem Methodist Church where services were held on Monday afternoon, July 19th, with the pastor, Rev. James L. Clements officiating.

            The burial was held in the Etlan Methodist Cemetery at Etlan, Madison County, Va.

            The Geest Funeral Home of Culpeper and Criglersville were in charge of the services.

Mrs. Elizabeth Knighting

MRS. E.S. KNIGHTING

            Mrs. Elizabeth S. Knighting, wife of John W. Knighting, died April 18 at her home near Syria.

            The daughter of the late Robert and Harriet Southard, she was 74 years of age.

            She is survived by 13 children, Jesse of Winchester, Casper of Stephenson, Va., Ernest of Washington, Elmer of Staunton, Warnie of Harrisonburg, Wilson of Syria, Johnnie of Winston, Mrs. Ellie Knighting of Harrisonburg, Mrs. Virgie Weakley of Brightwood, Mrs. Mae Haines of Etlan, Mrs. Luna Rosson of Reva, Mrs. Elsie Ryder of Lignum and Miss Lillie Knighting of Syria. She leaves also, one brother, Mr. Johnny Southard, 73 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

            Pallbeareres at the funeral which was held Sunday, April 19, were Shelton and Samuel Knighting, Thomas and Charles Haines, Clarence Rosson and Madison Weakley, all grandsons.

James Polk Nicholson

            James Polk Nicholson, a Confederate veteran, died July 2, 1930 at the home of his son, Mr. J.R. Nicholson, with whom he lived at Nethers. He was 85 years old.

            His request was to be buried in an army casket, which was furnished by Mr. H.L. Bowler, the undertaker.                                                                                                           

Roosevelt Nicholson

            Roosevelt Nicholson, 61, of Hoover Road, Reva, died suddenly Monday, July 13, death reportedly of a heart attack.

            Nicholson, a carpenter, was working on construction of a house Monday afternoon, at Routes 646 and 612 when death came. The Culpeper Rescue Squad was called and summoned Dr. W.B. Cave, pf Madison, who pronounced the victim dead.

            He was born December 9, 1903, son of the late James and Cynthia Corbin Nicholson. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Maxie Corbin Nicholson, two brothers: Walter Nicholson of Brightwood and Daniel Nicholson of Charlestown, W.Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Anita Nicholson of Leon, Mrs. Charles Mills and Mrs. John Nicholson both of Culpeper.

            Funeral services were to be held today, Thursday, at two o’clock in Bethel Baptist Church, Culpeper, with burial in the church cemetery.                                                

Henry S. Rider

HENRY SAMUEL RIDER

            Henry Samuel Rider, well known and successful farmer and orchardist, died suddenly the morning of Jan. 19th, 1943 at his home near Etlan, Va.

            He was the son of the late Alfred Thomas Rider and the late Margaret Ann Jenkins Rider. He is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs. W.P. Jenkins of Winston, Mrs. I.J. Utz of Banco, Mrs. Lyle Jenkins of Culpeper and Mrs. Knox Gibbs of Winston, and seven sons; Winston of Sellersville, Pa.; Watson of Lahore, Kirby of Winston, Willis of Rapidan, Sheldon and Silver of Etlan and Edward Lee in the U.S. Army, also 2 brothers, Oscar and Porter of Etlan and Joseph L., of West Chester, Pa. A sister, Mrs. Minnie E. Donald of Brunswick, Ga., 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

            Mr. Rider was a member of the Etlan Methodist Church from which his funeral took place Thursday, Jan. 21st, at 2:30 p.m., with his pastor, Rev. T.J. Cassell assisted by Rev. P.H. Chelf of Flint Hill, conducting the services with burial in the church cemetery by the side of his wife the late Mrs. Terah Catherine Rider, who died two years ago...

Mrs. Lucy R. Shifflett

Last Rites Held For Mrs. O.N. Shifflett

            Mrs. Lucy Rebecca Shifflett, widow of the late Octave N. Shifflett, died at 9:20 o'clock Saturday night, Feb. 7 at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. W.F. Hall, Sr., 711 Nalle Street, Charlottesville.

            Mrs. Shifflett was formerly a native of Madison county, daughter of the late Noah W. and Angeline Coates Price, and was 78 years of age. Besides Mrs. Hall, she is survived by three other daughters, Mrs. W.J. Collier of Waldorf, Md.; Mrs. L.E. Arthur of Charlottesville and Mrs. W.I. Herring of Elkton; three sons, N.W. Shifflett of Charlottesville; W.H. Shifflett of Rochelle and C.F. Shifflett of Atlanta, Ga., and one sister, Mrs. Lee Lindsay of near Radiant. There are 32 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

            Funeral rites were held Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 10 at the Bethel Methodist church, at Rochelle, of which she had been a faithful member for many years. The services were conducted by Rev. G.C. Smith, pastor of Bethel Methodist church, assisted by Rev. R.K. Richardson, pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance church in Charlottesville...

Charlie Davis Sisk

            Charlie Davis Sisk, 90, and native of Madison County, died Tuesday, April 18, in a Staunton Hospital. He was a retired stonemason.

            The son of the late Sarah Hurt Sisk and Layton Sisk, he leaves his wife, Hedrick Hessie Sisk; two sons, Charles Sisk of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Ather Sisk, of Alexandria, four daughters, Mrs. Haywood Nicholson and Mrs. Bennie Sisk, both of Madison, Mrs. Charles Taylor of Stanley; and Mrs. William Van Leewin of Phoenix, Arix.; one sister, Mrs. Alpha Breeden of Alexandria, thirty-one grandchildren and forty-five great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

            The funeral was held April 20 at two o’clock in the Etlan Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.                                                                                                        

Bertha Price Tucker

MRS. BERTHA TUCKER

            Bertha Price Tucker died July 9. Had she lived until July 12 she would have been 69 years of age.

            She was the youngest daughter of the late Noah and Angeline Price.

            She is survived by her husband, William Tucker, one son, Leslie and two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Lindsay and Mrs. Lucy Shifflett. She leaves also five grandchildren.

            She was laid to rest in Walker's Chapel Cemetery with J.C. Clore in charge of funeral arrangements.

Major Thornton Smith

MAJOR THORNTON SMITH

            Major Thornton Smith, 73, died Saturday, March 20, at his home Montpelier Station. Funeral services were held at Preddy Funeral Home the following Monday by the Rev. O.T. Kelly, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church. Interment was in Graham cemetery.

            He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Molli Berry Smith, two sons, E.G. and Irving Smith; two daughters, Mrs. Inez Nicholson and Miss Idella Smith; two brothers, Henry Smith of Madison and James Smith of Culpeper; three sisters, Mrs. Mahta Weakley of Syria, Mrs. Aldridge Nicholson andMrs. Laura Berry, both of Syria, and Mrs. Babie Yowell of Culpeper.

Wesley Y. Smith

Wesley Y. Smith

            Wesley Y. Smith died June 12, 1930, at his home in the Syria section.

            Mr. Smith was 89 years old. He had lived an honorable life, having been industrious and frugal. Through honest toil he was enable to lay up for himself and family a competency for old age.

            He leaves a widow of ripe age, two sons and four daughters to mourn their loss.

            The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.M. Mosser, at the home place. Mr. H.L. Bowler was the undertaker.                                                                            

Mrs. Emma Susan Tanner

MRS. EMMA SUSAN TANNER

            Mrs. Emma Susan Tanner, widow of the late George Tanner of Aylor, Madison county, died early Tuesday morning, March 3, at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Broyles, after a period of declining health. She was in the 85th year of her life.

            She was the daughter of the late Elizabeth Cave and the late Frank Mauck of Page county. She was twice married. Her first marriage was to the late Silas Fincham and from this marriage she reared a family of eight children of whom six are surviving.

            The sons are Alex, Franklin, James Lee and Joseph David Fincham, all located in Virginia.

            The daughters are Mrs. Virginia Loyd of Spottsylvania, Mrs. Ellis McDaniel of Orange, and Mrs. Ernest Broyles of Aylor.

            She was a member of the Oak Grove Methodist church of Aylor and services were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. J.T. Cassell on Wednesday afternoon, March 4, from the residence with burial in the family cemetery...

Mrs. Emily Frances Weakley

Mrs. James K. Weakley

            Mrs. Emily Frances Weakley died Monday morning, May 26, 1930, at the home of her son, Mr. Eppa Weakley, at Nethers.

            Mrs. Weakley was born Oct. 36, 1844, in Rappahannock county. Dec. 25, 1866, she was married to Mr. James K. Weakley, who survives his true and loving helpmeet of more than 60 years, and their home was at Nethers. The past winter owing to the infimities of age they went to live with their son, in whose home they have been tenderly cared for. They had eight children, four surviving as follows: Mrs. Ida Collins, of Davis, W.Va.; Mrs. Frank McAlister, of Culpeper; Mrs. James W. Weakley, of Springfield, Ill., and Mr. E.K. Weakley, of Nethers.

            Mrs. Weakley had been a member of Bethlehem M.E. church for almost 60 years…

            Rev. J.B. Pettus, her pastor, conducted her funeral at Bethlehem church Tuesday…                                                                                                                                  

J.K. WEAKLEY

J.K. Weakley

            J.K. Weakley, a venerable countyman, died June 5, 1930, at the home of his son, Mr. E.H. Weakley, at Nethers. Mr. Weajley survived his wife just 10 days…

            Mr. Weakley was 86 years old and is survived by a number of children and grandchildren.

            His funeral Friday at Bethlehem M.E. church was attended by a large concourse and conducted by the family pastor, Rev. J.B. Pettus.

            Both Mr. and Mrs. Weakley were buried in walnut coffins made by Mr. Jones, of Nethers. Mr. H.L. Bowler being funeral director at each burial.
