The
first census for the Commonwealth was in 1785,
while the first Federal census was taken in
1790.
The 1790
census schedules for Virginia no longer exist as
they were burned by the British during the War
of 1812. Using state enumerations and tax lists,
the 1790 census has been reconstructed for
Virginia & published.
