Nelson County was formed in 1807 from Amherst county and was named for the third Governor of
Virginia, Thomas Nelson, Jr. In the 1930's, Earl Hamner began writing about growing up during the depression in Nelson County, which became the basis for
the television series The Walton's. Nelson County is bordered on the north by
Augusta County, the Northeast
by Albemarle County, the Southeast by
Buckingham County, the southwest by
Amherst County, and on the west by
Rockbridge County.
