From Virginia, A Guide to the Old Dominion
Christiansburg, the county seat of Montgomery County, was founded in 1792 on land donated by Colonel James CRAIG. The town was first called Hans Meadows, and later named for Colonel William CHRISTIAN, brother-in-law of Patrick HENRY. Prior to becoming a separate county Montgomery was part of Fincastle County which was formed in 1772 from Botetourt and extinguished in 1777. The City of Radford was in Montgomery County until 1892 but is now an Independent City.
