Thomas Overton - 1840 Buckingham Co. Va Thomas Overton married Mary Bondurant McAshan in 1836 in Buckingham Co. He appears in the 1840 census in Buckingham thus: 2m under 5; 1 m 20-30; 1 m 30-40 and 1 f 15-20. The two males under 5 yrs. were John,( who appears in the 1850 census for Nottoway Co. living with his grandfather, Moses Overton) and Tinsley. The name "Tinsley" is a family tradition and I have no written proof of it. Their sister, Virginia (b 1842) appears in the 1850 census for Nottoway Co. living with her father Thomas and his second wife. Did Tinsley stay in Buckingham Co.? Who did Virginia marry? There is also a family story that John and Tinsley changed their surname to Overby about 1860, after a family disagreement. I will appreciate very much any help ! Kathleen

-FITZGERALD- Hello, I'm so happy to see that Buckingham County has been "ADOPTED".Are you a resident of Buckingham County? My maternal grandmother's family is from Buckingham County and I need some help with the family research going back to early 1800's as this information is not available through vital stats dept of Virginia. James Henderson Fitzgerald and Lucy Eldridge were the grandparents of my grandmother, Fannie Byrd Fitzgerald (b. 1885). It is the generation between them that I am trying to prove. Her father was the son of James and Lucy. His name was FRANCIS ELDRIDGE FITZGERALD who married Mary Hill. He went by his middle name as he already had a sister named Frances when he was born. I haven't been able to get anything yet to PROVE the connection. Birthecertificates are not available for that time period. I have some leads (Census, Church baptism records) but no documents. Thank you. Jane Congdon 9/96

I believe his father could be James, Samuel, or Thomas or William. {I know William is not one of kids names, but there is some reason why I stuck him in there, but it eludes me at the time). There are some of all in 1800 Buckingham. More James than other names. I have been looking at tax records/land records/ and ruled out some people. Also looked at the new book on the MAXEY family, and it has some clues, but haven't narrowed it down. The first boy is named for wife's father, I would like to to think the second boy is named for his father and third boy may be named for paternal grandfather. Or the Samuel may be father and grandfather. This family lived near the Slate River, probably in center of county. They were closely affiliated with the MAXEY and KIDD families. Any help would be appreciated. Alice 10/96
