Preliminary Description:
This small collection, dated between 1846 and 1853, contains an exchange of correspondence
between members of Daniel Coffman's family. The scarcity of correspondence is due, in part, to
the difficulty in transport and communication in general, and to the relative ability of the family
members to write. The correspondence reflects the family as industrious, persevering and
Christian. Their Christian beliefs are particularly consoling in the face of illnesses and deaths of
friends and relatives during the said period, and in overcoming loneliness on account of their
geographic separation from each other. An important motivation for any correspondence was a
belief among them that it was a "family duty" to inform each other of anything that was of interest
to the family as a whole.
