Mrs. Katherine Ellen Akers Byers, 89, formerly of Covington, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at St. Barnabas Nursing Home in Chattanooga, Tenn. She was the widow of Grover C. Byers, who preceded her in death in 1991. She was born March 2, 1911, a daughter of the late Odie Rhodes Akers and John Wallace Akers. Mrs. Byers was employed by the Silk Mill and Westvaco. She was a so a homemaker. She was involved with the Alleghany Home Demonstration Club and she was a Girl Scout and 4-H Club leader. Mrs. Byers was a lifetime member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of No. 1 Circle and the Women's Bible Sunday School Class. Mrs. Byers is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ellen Byers and Mike Taylor of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three stepsons, Joe Byers of Amelia, Gene Byers of Emporia, and Grover C. Byers, Jr. of Covington; a grandson, Michael Jason Tyalor, granddaughters Kimberly Michele Taylor Linthicum and Mary Katherine Taylor, all of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren Marsha Hamilton, Debbie Elliot, Jeffery Smith, Gregory Byers, Timmy Byers, Becky Gene Turner, Betsy Joe Short and Amy Singletary; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Katheleen Byers of Covington and Nancy Byers Hodges of Greensboro, N.C.; seven-nieces, Ellen A. He was born June 1, 1939, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Charles W. and Ella McAllister Arrington. e was employed as a Machinist at Acadia Polymers, Inc at Iron Gate. He was a member of the Hokes Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served as Doorkeeper of the church and a member of the Hokes chapel Mens' Club. Mr. Arrington was an active volunteer in the Alleghany Highlands Literacy Program through the TAP Office in Covington, where he served as an inspiration to others by his accomplishments. Mrs. Jackson was born in Covington Dec. 2, 1919, a daughter of the late Lillie O. and Charles D. Arrington, Sr. She was reared in the home of her grandparents, the late Owen and Rebecca Carter. Mrs. Jackson was a faithful employee of Safeway and she was a devoted homemaker. She was of the Methodist faith. Surviving are a son, Charles E. Jackson, Jr.; three daughters, Chrystal E. Chalkley, Constance E. Schrom and Cheri E. Holbrook; four brothers, Bonner Arrington, Harold Arrington, Howard Arrington and Garland Arrington; two aunts and an uncle, Katherine and James Chaplin of Bell, W.Va.; Melvina Carter Pullin of Covington; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was a member of Falling Springs Presbyterian Church. Other survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Homer (Helen) Riddelbarger, Brookneal; three sons, William P. Reynolds, David R. Mrs. Rickett was born March 18, 1909, in alleghany County, a daughter of the late William Jackson Arrington and Mary Ida Craft Arrington. She was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church and the Pines Garden Club. Mrs. Rickett was formerly employed by the Industrial Rayon and Westvaco during World War II, and for many years, she was employed at the cafeteria of the former Jeter School and Jeter-Watson Elementary School. Surviving are two sons, Leonard C. Rickett Jr. of Covington; Edgar Ray Rickett of Covington; two daughers, Mrs. William (Nancy) Plott of Covington; Mrs. Paul B. (Charlotte) Wilmer of College Station, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rickett was preceded in death aby four brothers and four sisters.
