Mrs. Katherine Ellen Akers Byers, 89, formerly of Covington, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at St. Barnabas Nursing Home in Chattanooga, Tenn. She was the widow of Grover C. Byers, who preceded her in death in 1991. She was born March 2, 1911, a daughter of the late Odie Rhodes Akers and John Wallace Akers. Mrs. Byers was employed by the Silk Mill and Westvaco. She was a so a homemaker. She was involved with the Alleghany Home Demonstration Club and she was a Girl Scout and 4-H Club leader. Mrs. Byers was a lifetime member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of No. 1 Circle and the Women's Bible Sunday School Class. Mrs. Byers is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ellen Byers and Mike Taylor of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three stepsons, Joe Byers of Amelia, Gene Byers of Emporia, and Grover C. Byers, Jr. of Covington; a grandson, Michael Jason Tyalor, granddaughters Kimberly Michele Taylor Linthicum and Mary Katherine Taylor, all of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren Marsha Hamilton, Debbie Elliot, Jeffery Smith, Gregory Byers, Timmy Byers, Becky Gene Turner, Betsy Joe Short and Amy Singletary; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Katheleen Byers of Covington and Nancy Byers Hodges of Greensboro, N.C.; seven-nieces, Ellen A. OBIT: Mr. Gilbert Garfield Armontrout, aged 85 years, of Madison, Missouri, died Wednesday, June 11, at Audrian Medical Center in Mexico. He had been a patient there for three weeks. Born near Paint Bank, VA May 29, 1890, he was the son of Andrew Washington Lafayette and Emma Bostic Armontrout. He later moved with his family to Missouri. He was married Sept. 24, 1911 to Bessie Eadle Simpson, who died Feb. 15, 1952. Mr. Armontrout is survived by two brothes, Frank Armontrout of Madison, and Russell Armontrouot of Centralia, and by one sister, Mrs. Ben (Margaret) Wilson of Centralia, and several nephews and nieces. Following retirement from Westvaco, Daddy Bob volunteered at the Sheltered Workshop in Covington and, for a number of years, he was a parts delivery man for Woody's Auto Parts. John Sampson Armentrout gave the land for the school with the understanding that it was to be open for Religious Services. When no longer used, the school house was put up for auction and John Fridley was the highest bidder. He tore it down. The land was converted back to the Armentrout Estate. This was in 1927. John Sampson Armentrout went to school there.John Stone No. 1 died about 1862 on the upper end of Castile Run and was buried there in the woods along with his wife and son.Sampson Bennett raised tobacco, hauled it to Lynchburg and sold the tobacco at the warehouse there.Shelt Harmon made a pair of wings out of yellow locust. They were thrashing there on the stone Mountain Farm. At noon he climbed a chestnut tree and jumped out. OBIT: 6 Jul 19193: Ralph Harold Armentrout, 86, of Route 1, Covington, died Sunday in the Veterans' Affairs Medical Center in Salem. He was the husband of Muriel Carter Armentrout. He was born February 23, 1907 in Alleghany County, a son ofthe late George Wiliam Armentrout and Lettie Matheny Armentrout. Mr. Armentrout was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. He was a 1924 graduate of Covington High School. His hobbies included crossword puzzles, gardening and hunting. He was a retired farmer and had served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. In adition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Miss Loretta Lynn Armentrout of GroveCity, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Nettie A. Rickett and Mrs. Mary Emma Liptrap, both of Covington, and Miss Helen Virginia Armentrout of Low Moor; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Armentrout was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Lola Mae Parker in 1981. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. He was born August 3, 1925 in Clifton Forge, a son of the late Ezra and Grace Armentrout. Mr. Armentrout was a member of the Trinity United Mehtodist Church in Red Springs. He was also a Mason. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Lawler Armentrout of Red Springs; one son, David Armentrout of Red Springs; one daughter, Miss Pam Armentrout of Red Springs; one brother, Joe Armentrout of Waynesboro; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret White and Mrs. Jewel Preas of Salem and Mrs. Ella Weber of Valley Ridge. The funeral service will be conducted Friday at 11a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Red Springs. Mr. Armentrout was 56 years old and was the son of John Samuel and Frances Armentrout. He was a member of Pernell Chapel and was also a member of I.O.O. and the A.M.O.S. Lodges. Surviving are his widow and children, six sons and four daughters: Frank Delbert and Hubert of Covington, Richard of Hope, WV, Clarence, Roscoe and Irene at home; Mrs. Mildred Lockhart, Mrs. Stella Barnett and Mrs. Evelyn Campbell, all of Covington. Mr. Armentrout was born July20,1920, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Robert Lee and Rebecca Ann Helmintoller Armentrout. He retired in 1983 as a carpenter after 42 years with Westvaco Corp. in Covington. He was a member of Local 675, United Paperworkers International Union, and was secretary for the Westvaco Credit Union. Mr. Armentrout was currently secretary for the Westvaco Retirees Association. For most of his adult life, he enjoyed coin collecting and was a member of the former Alleghany Coin Club. Mr. Armentrout was a member and past deacon of First Christian Church, were he served as secretary of the Men's Sunday School Class for many years. She had been a faithful and continuous member of the First Christian Church since 1924. She was a member of the Lady's Bible Class. Other than her husband of 60 years, Elbert, Mrs. Price is survived by three sisters, Mildred Armentrout and Irene McCauley, both of Covington, and Evelyn Morrison of Solomons, Md. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Clarence, Richard, Roscoe, Frank, Delbert and Hubert Armentrout.
