RULES

Queries must name specific persons being researched.
a. Queries that only give a surname will not be posted.
b. Instead, submit the surname for posting on our Surname Register
Your query must STATE a connection to the county for the folks named in the query.
a. The connection may be as slim as the fact that you've seen similar names in records of the county, but ...
b. Stating that you're searching in the county is not good enough. There must be a reason to expect researcher in this county to recognize your family
In the subject line or in the message text please state that it's for this QueryPage.
a. My crystal ball is foggy. Unless you're specific about where to post it I must either guess or return the query for clarification.
Make your query specific, but don't write a lengthy narrative. Try to keep them to 20 lines, but that's not a hard and fast rule.
a. No "Indented" or "Register" Reports, or other format that depends on specific line spacing.
b. With all the counties I host, the editing to add the HTML tags becomes an onerous workload
Although not a requirement, it's nice to include your given name in the text.
a. It makes your query more personal, and more likely to receive a response

BARNES - Doing genealogical research for my maternal family, and am attempting to locate information on a James S Barnes, my great-grandfather. I have scant information, as he took the family from Clifton Forge, VA to the Charleston, WV area in the early 1920's, left my great-grandmother there with their 10 children and then he disappeared - presumably back to the Clifton Forge area.

His name is James S Barnes (no one seems to know what the "S" stood for) He was probably born sometime between 1865 - 1870 He married Dora May Goodwin, a full-blooded Cherokee Indian, born 1870, died 1942 He was a plasterer by trade He had 10 children with Dora May, all born in Clifton Forge, VA: Bessie Barnes m. unknown Mahaney (sp?), John Barnes, Guy Barnes, Madie Barnes m. Joseph Johnson, Virginia ("Trix") Dare Barnes m. Carson Wells, Alma Barnes m. Wylie Tucker, Georgene Barnes m. Clark Kessinger (and) m. unknown Walker, Earl Barnes (last known resident of CA), unknown girl Barnes (died at early age) and Katie Thelma Barnes m. Vaught Taylor (this is my grandmother, who married 9/23/33 in Charleston WV).

It is assumed James brought the family to the Lick Branch (Charleston) WV area on the suggestion of Madie's husband, Joseph Johnson, on the hope of finding work and bringing Dora May to be nearer her family. We believe his intention was to bring them to WV, establish the family with the sister Madie, and then leave due to an unhappy marital situation.

He has not been heard from since that time, somwhere in the early 1920's. My grandmother, Katie Thelma Barnes, was born Spetember 26, 1915, died December 31, 1969. My mother remembers that Katie told her the move to WV took place when she was probably 5-6 yrs old, 1920-21.

BRYAN - Looking for anyone associated with or having information on Hugh Bryan, married Nancy M. _ marriage said to have taken place in Alleghany county but the date is unknown. Data derived from 1860 Logan county, WV census(I know, WV wasn't a state in 1860)). First, the record contains an entry noting "Hugh, Alleghany co. VA" Born ~1811, Occupation _ Physician, Wife(?) Nancy M., Children, Andrew S., George, maybe others. More Logan county, WV records show two sons _ Andrew, 1837 and Cyrus, 1828 as being born in Alleghany county. I presume two other known children _ George and Matthew _ who were born between Cyrus and Andrew, were also born in Alleghany county. A number of family members are buried in a churchyard cemetery (Mt. Pleasant, I think). I bellieve the family emigrated to the Covington area from Allegheny County, PA. I remember being told as a boy that a lady from Hot Springs had compiled a history of the Grose family. I would appreciate any information that you could provide.

I believe I have found John on the rolls and am waiting documentation from the National Archives based on the indexed number I found.

HARLOW -- Could someone tell me if there is a marriage listed in Allegheny Co for Thomas Harlow and Caroline???. This would be around 1849-1850. This Thomas was originally m. to Lucy Humphries. The 1850 Augusta Co Census shows him with a "Caroline" in the househould, but I believe Lucy was all the children's mother. Since the last child, Mary Jane was age 1 on the 1850 Census, and her marriage record indicates she was b. in Allegheny Co, it is possible his new marriage took place here. If anyone has access to death records for that period, could you check to see if Lucy Harlow is indicated.

It is believed that his father was Hubert Hoke and supposedly he did this near Daniel Hoke's house (Hubert's brother) I have traced this line back to 1730 and wanted to clarify dates. It was supposedly in numerous newspapers and I was told he was the first person in state of VA to die by th electric chair. Daniel's house was located in the Jerry's run area which is now called Hoke Road. My father lives by the house. If you don't have any info on him could you be able to tell me how to get it. McCALLISTER -- I have been hunting for my early ancestors that I believe were in this area. The names of the ancestors were James and Mary McCallister. When I first found them as living in Virginia, the land mass on which they resided was then called Augusta County, VA. I believe the same people and their property stayed in the same location but that the name of the county under which they lived changed to the name of Botetourt County, VA at the time of the American Revolution. Later, at the time of the death of this James McCallister (in about 1801), the same person and his land was now listed as being in the land mass as Bath County, VA. In fact his will was recorded in Bath County. I beleive his property was located on the Jackson River and I believe that same land became part of the formation of another new county called, Alleghany County, VA.

I am wondering if you, or any members of the Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society, Inc. are able to verify my logic or help me locate his actual property? I found some of the land that James and his wife Mary McCallister purchased in the year of 1764, recorded in the court house of Augusta County, VA. Would that information help in locating that land?

McLAUGHLIN/GROSE/PATTERSON/WADE -- the list is very long but these are the main ones that may be around the Alleghany region. Maybe not. I've been able to trace six and seven generations back on each of Stephen's ancestors, some further than that. But I realize I've been very lucky. Tonight, I received a phone call from my brother in law who wanted to tell me that he found a scrap piece of paper with a name on it that he didn't recall anything about except that his mother, Katherine, who has since passed, said to contact this person for family information. I don't know how old the note is but it would have to be at least four years old.

The name on the note is Ester Brown Newman Coleman. From my records and my father in law's memory, she is the niece of my father in law's mother...his first cousin. She was born April 23, 1908. Julian, my father in law is 85. He is very actively involved in my research. He is the reason I started it. We live in Roanoke. Julian told me tonight that anytime I want to go to see her he will be ready in five minutes. Now I have to find her. Julian said she lived in Valley Forge (near the river) He thinks it has only been a year or two since he last spoke to her. He said her husband had passed away earlier. I have looked for a telephone number for her to no avail. She would be 93 years old. She never had children, in fact didn't marry until about 1964 when she was almost 60 years old. After looking at your society website, I think he would really enjoy a visit (we come to Covington frequently anyway) to the society meeting. Please advise if the meeting for this month will be held as scheduled. I will be happy to share what information I have gathered thus far. Also my personal library of research books is growing. :)

SMITH -- Robert Smith, who by official records claimed his birthplace as Alleghany County, VA around 1821 or 1822 (records vary). This man participated in what would later be known as the South Road expedition with the Applegates into the Oregon territory. Official records show he took a donation land claim and married Susan Applegate, the daughter of Charles Applegate. When his wife died in 1907 she was buried in the Applegate family plot. His burial plot remains a mystery as he is not to be found anywhere in the cemetery with the rest of the Applegates. There is some indication that he died in 1888. Since Oregon did not keep birth or death records until 1903 I have no official proof of what happened to him and no information on children if their were any.
