Mary Emma Adams Ollorton, 15 Jul 1857 - 1935

PROVO, April 15.--Mrs. Mary Emma Adams Ollorton, 77, widow of the late James 
Ollorton, former mayor of Parowan, died at her home, 138 east Fourth North 
street, Sunday morning after an illness of five days.  Mrs. Ollorton was one 
of the pioneer educators of the state and took a prominent part in the 
movement to write a woman's suffrage clause into the Utah state 
constitution.

    She was born in Parowan, on July 15, 1857, where she grew up to womanhood. 
She became the first teacher to teach school under the United Order in 
Parowan in 1874.  She was instrumental in organizing the Young Ladies Mutual 
Improvement association and one of the first officers of that organization 
in southern Utah.

    She became active in Relief society work later and served as president of 
the Parowan stake Relief society for 15 years, resigning in 1916 when the 
family moved to Tempe, Ariz., where her husband died the following year.

    She came to Provo with three daughters in 1918 where she has since 
resided.  One daughter Miss Mary Ollorton, professor of education at the 
Brigham Young university died a year ago.

    She is survived by six children: Miss Anna Ollorton, librarian, Brigham 
Young university, and Miss Fay Ollorton, both of Provo: Mrs. Lola O. Turley 
and Preston Ollorton, Tempe, Ariz.; Mrs. Sadie Clark, Ela Paso, Texas; M. L. 
Ollorton, Phoenix, Ariz., and 14 grandchildren.
  
    Funeral services will be held in the Provo Fifth ward chapel today at 2 
p.m.  Friends may call prior to the services at the home.  Interment will be 
in the Provo City cemetery.
