KANE [Fall River MA Herald News, Sunday 25 Feb 2007] John F. Kane, former mayor of Fall River, died Saturday at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham after a brief illness. He was 93 years old. He was the husband of the late Mary M. (Leddy) Kane. Born in Fall River, son of the late James and the late Ann (Mulligan) Kane, he resided in Framingham for the past seven years, previously living in Fall River and Yarmouthport. Mr. Kane served as mayor of Fall River from 1952 to 1958. He is probably best remembered for his first run for the office, which resulted in a one-vote margin of victory for the incumbent, William P. Grant. The original count of votes in November 1951 had Mr. Kane the winner by eight votes, but an extended recount showed Mr. Grant the winner by a single vote. In March 1952, the state Supreme Judicial Court, after eight weeks of deliberations, unanimously declared Mr. Kane the winner by 30 votes. "The Supreme Court has made the decision that I have been expecting," he stated. "There have been times during this long period when it has been discouraging and frustrating. However, in such times we find ourselves saying, 'That's democracy, and that's the way it has to work for the good of all.'" The major issue during the campaign was the development of new industry. "I renew my invitation to you all to join with me in a real effort to make more jobs for Fall River people," he told the citizenry. "With a strong desire to perform well, and with the assistance of God, we can move forward toward a better and more prosperous Fall River." Shortly after taking office, Mr. Kane ordered the acting police chief to rid the city of bookies and gamblers. "If there are bookies here, it is the job of the police chief to drive them out," he said. After his mayoral service, he served as U.S. property and fiscal officer for the commonwealth for 16 years.
