The Virginia USGenWeb Archives is presently being updated with new Table of Contents pages. This will take us a little while. In the meantime, we hope you will continue to visit.

We need your help! The documents in the archives are there through the kindness of people just like you who have contributed documents to us. Please consider contributing Virginia documents that are in your possession. Documents need not just be about your ancestors. Any Virginia document would be greatly appreciated. We want to make this site grow so as to serve genealogists by providing free access to Virginia records.

Contributions can be sent to the designated county file managers or to Sharon Hamilton, Virginia File Manager. Contributions may also be submitted using the Record Submission Forms.

The following are examples of types of documents needed.

Federal Census (free, slave, mortality, agriculture, veterans... schedules)
State Census
Vital Records (marriage, birth, death, divorce)
Court records (county, federal, civil, circuit, probate....)
Church records (members lists, baptisms...)
Bible Records
Newspapers (obits, marriage & birth announcements, local events...)
Prison Records (got some proven moonshiners in my tree - the rest is just rumor )
Military Records (rosters, muster rolls, service records, pension applications...)
Land Records (deeds, land transfers, federal land grants, surveyor's records...)
Tax Records (land, property, state, federal, local....)
Local Histories
Local Directories (phone books, old county and city directories....)
Occupational (?) (Mining inspector's reports, Accident reports, railroad reports, company newsletters....)
Educational (?) (school histories, newsletters, KY's school census, yearbooks?)
Cemeteries
Deeds/grants
