Grayson County was formed in 1793 from part of Wythe County. Parts of Patrick County were added on six different occasions up to 1874-75. It was named after Colonel William Grayson, United States Senator from Virginia. The County Seat is Independence. On the north is Wythe County, on the west are Smyth and Washington Counties, on the east is Carroll County, and on the south are North Carolina and Tennessee.
