Craig County was organized in 1851. It was formed from Botetourt, Roanoke, Giles, and Monroe Counties. Parts were added from Monroe and Montgomery Counties in 1852-53, Alleghany and Monroe Counties in 1855-56 and Giles County in 1857-58 and 1879-80. Craig County was named after Robert Craig, member of U.S. Congress (1829-1833, 1835-1841). The county seat is New Castle.
