Zapata County was formed on January 22, 1858 from Webb and Starr Counties
and was organized on April 26, 1858. It was named in honor of
Antonio Zapata, a pioneer stockman of the region and supporter of the
Republic of the Rio Grande. The county seat was Carrizo in 1858 and
the name was later changed to Zapata.
