Webb County was formed from Nueces County on 28 January 1848, and organized on 16 March 1848. It was named in honor of James Webb (1792-1856), the Attorney General and Secretary of State of the Republic of Texas from 1838 to 1841. Laredo, the county seat, was founded in 1755.
