Meeting on Saturday, September 8, 2007

The meeting on September 8 began with a sumptuous brunch at the Rio Ranch Restaurant. The brunch was followed by a presentation from Staff Sergeant Danial F. Lisarelli on his book about Camp Groce, The Last Prison: The Untold Story of Camp Groce CSA, [For more information about Camp Groce and Danial's book, check out our Home page].

January Meeting at the Fisher House

On Saturday, January 12, 2008; our Tent meeting was held at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center Fisher House in Houston, Texas. The program for today's meeting included the initiation of three new members since our Tent was chartered on Feburary 11, 2007. Two of our three new members were present for the initiation ceremony, Grace Cooper and Shari Muller. After the meeting it was time to eat lunch. Lunch today was "Pot-Luck", or if you prefer, "Cover-Dish"; and there was plenty to go around for all.

[Marilyn and Grace each brought 2 desserts, Marilyn's were the same, and Grace brought a coffee cake and a lemon cake. Sheryl Parker brought a salad called Apple Cowboy Slaw]

Lt. Cmder Edward Lea USN Camp #2, Houston, Texas, SUVCW Meeting

On Tuesday, April 8, 2008, Martha Class, our Senior Vice President, attended the Edward Lea Camp #2 meeting and made a report to Jim Hackett, Campt Commander, about the three eighth graders from Fresno, CA., Gianni, Brionna, and Gaby, who won first place at their History Day Competion on Saturday, March 15, 2008 with their Exhibit on Sarah Emma Edmonds alias Frank Thompson. During the meeting Martha got to meet some other Sisters of the DUVCW, who are also members of the Edward Lea Camp's Ladies Auxiliary, the Sarah Emma Seelye Auxiliary #1. [The Sarah Emma Seelye Auxiliary is having a President's Tea that will benefit our U.S. Troops on Sunday, April 27, 2008. More information about this event that our Tent has been invited to attend, can be found on the Tent Meetings page under Events.]

Final Meeting of 2007-2008

The Sisters of the Sarah Emma Edmonds Tent welcomed Trevia Wooster Beverly, Secretary of the Harris County Historical Commission*, (HCHC), who spoke about the, Blue and Gray in Harris County Cemeteries, this was a very informative presentation. Mrs. Beverly was accompanied by her husband, Murphy Travis Beverly. In addition to our speaker and her husband, we had two other guests at our meeting on Saturday, April 12, 2008; Jean Barnhill, our Patriotic Instructor, brought her daughter Mavis Feldman, who is now one of our Prospective Members. Our other guest was Stacey Brown, who is also a new Prospective Member.

[In addition to being the Secretary of the HCHC, Mrs. Beverly is also a member of the Harris County Historical Society, and is currently amongst the Genealogy Faculty of the Angelina College, and is currently serving her 4th year as Assistant Coordinator & Chairman for the Angelina College Genealogy Conference. She also serves on the committee that presents the Battle of San Jacinto symposium, and is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and Genealogical Speakers Guild]
