Most people involved in genealogy research have heard similar comments in conversations with relatives:

"I wish I'd written down or listened to some of the things mama told me;"

"Grandpa lived in the same house as his grandparents when he was a kid growing up.  I wish I'd asked him about them;" or

"I wonder what it was like when they lived out in the country.  Where was their house?  What did it look like?  Where did they go to school and worship?  What were their day-to-day lives like?"

The Preserve Your History Project is an effort to encourage people to record what they know about their Robertson County ancestors, their lives, and the places where they lived and worked.  If older people preserve their recollections today, these will be available for future generations of researchers to see.  As we all get older, what we know and have learned about Robertson County and our relatives will die with us unless we take steps to record this valuable information.

This page is dedicated to preserving written histories about the personal lives of our Robertson County ancestors.  If you haven't already done so, talk with older relatives, ask them about their early years in Robertson County (including what their parents and grandparents may have told them), and write it all down.  Draw sketches of old houses, barns, schools, churches, businesses, and other buildings that are no longer in existence. Take pictures of old buildings (particularly those that are not in use, are falling down, and may soon vanish).  Map out what the streets in a community looked like as far back as anybody can remember.  Whatever you produce and are willing to share will be posted here.  While this page focuses on written histories, information on oral histories (taping audio or video interviews with relatives) will be provided in the future.

New Baden Street Map -- A number of people have been creating a New Baden street map that identifies roads, businesses, schools, churches, and homes in the "downtown" New Baden of years past.  This information will be brought online shortly.  If you have information you'd like to share or wish to participate, contact William Kent Brunette.

Old Dieckmann Place -- Photographs have been taken of the old Dieckmann place outside of New Baden.  The dilapidated portion of the house that remains has been used as a barn for many years.  Artist sketches of the original house are being created based upon the recollections of someone who lived there as a child some 70 years ago.

Family History Narratives -- A series of articles is being drafted to preserve information about one family's Robertson County heritage.  These include:  Ellis Island, In Search Of Our German Roots, & Dieckmanns In America.  While these articles (two of which are still in draft form) relate to a particular family, they demonstrate how many early settlers might have gotten to Texas as well as what life in early 20th century Robertson County was like.

Similar articles about other families and their Robertson County experiences are encouraged.  Please post these under "Biographies" at Queries & Other Bulletin Boards.
