Confederate daughters organize

The organizational meeting of the McDonald-Sloan Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy was held Aug. 20 at the Fellowship Hall of the Methodist Church.

The chapter was named in honor of the fathers of two daughters whose fathers fought for the Confederate States: Thomas Sloan, whose daughter is Rhoda Sloan Poole, and W.D. McDonald, whose daughter is Mrs. Mignon McDonald Willis.  "The chapter is very proud to have these two "real" daughters among the 17 charter members," a spokesman said.

President Lucille McGill Bates called the meeting to order.  She and recording secretary Lynda Breeding were selected at an earlier meeting with the Texas Division president, Mrs. E.F. McEntire of Waco.

The following officers were elected for the upcoming year: vice president and program chairman, Maxine Williamson Cannon of Madisonville; treasurer, Loula Wayne Roberts of Normangee; corresponding secretary, Elaine Warden Brown of Madisonville; historian and librarian, Brenda David Streater of Madisonville; chaplin, Annye Best Martin of Normangee; and parliamentarian, Effie Hibbetts of North Zulch.

The chapter will meet the fourth Monday of every other month beginning in September at 3:30 p.m. at the fellowship hall (six times per year: September, November, January, March, May and July).

The next meeting will be a luncheon with state officer invited, at which time the chapter will receive its formal charter from the state division president and install its officers.

The state meeting of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will be Oct. 22, 23 and 24 in Waco at the Convention Center.

Anyone whose father, grandfather, great grandfather, etc., or an uncle who served the Confederate States may be eligible for membership in the chapter and is asked to contact one of the chapter officers for further information.

The U.D.C. has as some of its objectives: to locate and mark the graves of any Confederate veterans, promote education of young people by offering scholarship funds, help support a home for widows of Confederate veterans and other projects.
