Researching the Family Tree?
Genealogy Seminar Can Help Turn Over a New Leaf
Just how reliable is the information on Great-Grandma that’s posted on a genealogy Web site? How do you find an ancestor who doesn’t show up in the Census?
These questions and others will be answered Saturday, September 24, at the North Texas Genealogical Association Genealogy Seminar at the Church of Christ at Tenth and Broad, Wichita Falls. Speakers will be nationally known genealogists John and Barbara Wylie of Grand Prairie, Texas. Mr. Wylie serves on two committees of the National Genealogical Society and is a vice-president of the Dallas Genealogical Society. From 200-2004, he was a board member of the Association of Professional Genealogists. He is the 2004 recipient of the Dallas Genealogical Society’s Lloyd Bockstruck Distinguished Service Award. Mrs. Wylie provides professional genealogy services for clients.
Registration for the seminar begins at 8 a.m. The four seminar topics are:
9-10 a.m. – “What the Pros Know.” Mr. Wylie will disclose his experiences researching for others.
10:30-ll:30 a.m. – “Curlicues and Chicken Scratch.” Mrs. Wylie will show how to decipher penmanship styles and dialect that make old documents look like “chicken scratch.”
1:30-2:30 p.m. – “Pig in a Poke.” Mr. Wylie will explain how to sort the gold from the glitter posted on Internet genealogy sites.
3-4 p.m. – “Lost in the Census.” Mrs. Wylie will demonstrate how to search more effectively, using indexes, search engines and common sense to find that lost ancestor.
Cost of the seminar is $20 for individuals and $25 for husband and wife. Lunch and a packet of printed materials are included. Pre-registration deadline is September 15. Cost at the door will be $30 per person.
