McCulloch County, Texas.
McCulloch
County was formed by the Sixth Legislature from the Bexar District in
1856 and was named in honor of Benjamin McCulloch -- Indian fighter,
Texas Ranger, United States marshal, and brigadier general in the Army
of the Confederate States of America.
The geographical center of Texas is located
in
northeastern McCulloch County, sixteen miles northeast of Brady which
is the county seat. The first census of the county, taken in 1870,
listed the population as 173; by 1880 that number had grown to 1,533.
By 1910 the population had risen to 13,405 and in 2000 it was 8,205.
