Lee County, named for General Robert E. Lee, C.S.A., was carved from the surrounding counties of Burleson , Washington , Fayette , & Bastrop Counties, in April of 1874.
Though we are small in size we are big in history. The area played an important part in Spanish & Mexican history as well as in the development of the Republic (1836-1846) and later, the State of Texas. The county is traversed from east to west by the major route from Louisiana to Mexico traveled by  wagon train, pony express, settlers and soldiers alike.
That route--"Old San Antonio Road" (OSAR) , "Camino Real" or
"The Kings Highway"-- is modern day Texas Hwy 21.
