9. Harris County Obituaries
(a). The obituary name and the exact date of death must be known..
(b). The Houston Public Library Texas and Local History Department has on microfiche the Index to Texas Death Certificates. The indexed names are in a series of alphabets grouped by years: 1903-1940, 1941-1945, 1946-1955 and annually thereafter to 1995. It is better to give the year, and hopefully the month, for a search after 1940. Such a date of death search can be requested via the HPL Interactive procedure using the Email Reference Form at
HPL Interactive . Once the obituary name and date are known, submit an e-mail request, as above, for the staff to search the newspaper archives to find the obituary (or you may call the Biographic Information Center at (713) 236-1313.) They will only search a three day period; not an entire month or year.
See Houston Public Library answers for further information.
(c). We understand that the MAIN Houston library has both the Houston Post and the Houston Chronicle on microfilm (since their inception) for personal inspection and copying.
