Following is a transcription of the above person's (TN) obituary from the Fentress
County Gazette, Livingston, Fentress Co., TN, dated 02/11/1897:
Death of George E. LEMON, the
Pioneer Pension Attorney.
Capt. George E. LEMON, who for many years has been in control of
the largest pension claim agency in this country, died recently of a complication of
diseases. As a pension attorney he was eminently succesful, having amassed a fortune
of several millions of dollars in the business. He was also proprietor of the
National Tribune, an influential soldiers' paper.
Persons who had claims in Capt. LEMON's hands, are free to
appoint other attorneys to represent them, according to the rules and regulations of the
pension bureau, and, doubtless, an interesting scramble will ensue for the attorneyship in
cases which were incomplete at the date of Capt. LEMON's death.
As a citizen Capt. LEMON was most public spirited and generous.
His usual contribution to the fund for defraying the expenses of presidential
inaugurations was $1,000, while to the committee having charge of the encampment of the G.
A. R. at Washington in 1892 he gave $10,000. His private contributions to the
charities were large and numerous and his career as an attorney was without a stain.
In his death the old soldiers of the country have lost an able champion.
