All of the following documents were provided to me (Christy Jay) through the generosity of Joan Bushong Smith. Joan and her husband obtained the documents when in Claiborne County, TN in the summer of 2000. I have transcribed them to the best of my ability, adding some punctuation for easier reading. Most spellings are as they appear in the documents.

Deed Bk. R, pp. 11-12 (1842) Claiborne Co., TN State of Tennessee) Claiborne County) Personally appeared before me one Wiley Huffaker, Clerk of the County Court of said County, Joshua M. Treese the within named bargainer with whom I am personally acquainted and who acknowledged that he executed the within deed for the purposes therein contained. This Indenture made this thirteenth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty two between Joshua M. Trease of the County of Claiborne and State of Tennessee of the one part, and William C. Trease of the same County and State of the other part, witnesseth that the said Joshua M. Trease for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars to him in hand paid, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, hath and by these presents doth hereby grant bargain sell allien enfeoff convey and confirm unto the said William C. Trease and his heirs and assigns forever, all the right title interest claim and demand that he, the said Joshua M. Trease, has in and to three tracts of land being an undivided third part of said tracts of land, they being three of the tracts of land of which George Trease dec'd seized and possessed and which has decended to the heirs at law of said George Trease, the first tract containing seventy acres, the second fifty acres, and the third one hundred acres, lying in Claiborne County in and near the Lonesome Valley and on the south side of Powell's river, including all the houses where George Trease formerly lived and reference is hereby made to the title papers of sd. George Trease dec'd for boundries of said land, the undivided third part of a fourth tract containing thirty acres which also desended from sd. George Trease to Joshua M. Trease, one of his heirs at law, is not included in the conveyance but the whole title & interest of said Joshua M. Trease to his share of the three tracts first above mentioned is one of the heirs at law of said George Trease dec'd is hereby conveyed to have and to hold the said undivided third part of the said three tracts of land first above mentioned to the said William C. Trease and his heirs and assigns forever, with all the appurtenances in fee simple, saving and reserving the right of the widow of sd. George Trease dec'd to Dower in the said land. And the said Joshua M. Trease for himself and his heirs and assigns, doth covenant that he will forever warrant and defend the said undivided third part of the tracts of land hereby conveyed against the lawful title claim or demand of all and every person or persons whatever in law or ?. This Indenture made this twentieth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three between William C. Trease of the county of Claiborne and state of Tennessee of the one part and Joshua M. Trease of the county and state aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said William C. Trease for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars to him in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath and by these presents doth hereby bargain sell alien enfeoff convey and confirm unto the said Joshua M. Trease and to his heirs and assigns forever a certain third part of a tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Claiborne and State of Tennessee waters of Powels River at the head of the Middle fork of the Lonesome Valley, being one third part of the tract of land on which the said Joshua M. Trease now lives, it being the whole interest claim or demand that the said William C. Trease holds on said tract of land; reference is hereby made to the deed made from Samuel Cloud to Joshua M. Trease, William C. Trease and Caroline Trease for the boundaries of said land containing one hundred acres be the same more or less, but only one third part of said land conveyed by this deed to have and to hold the said third part of a tract or parcel of land to the said Joshua M. Trease and to his heirs and assigns forever as an indefeasible inheritance in fee simple, and the said William C. Trease for himself and his heirs doth covenant to and with the said Joshua M. Trease that he will forever warrant and defend the right and title to said described tract of land against the lawful title claim or demand of all and every person or persons whatever. Deed Book T, pp. 408-09 (1847), Claiborne County, Tennessee State of Tennessee) Claiborne County) Personally appeared before me Thos. J. Johnson, Clerk of the County Court of said County, Joshua M. Treese, Jerial D. Mays and Caroline Mays with whom I am personally acquainted and who acknowledged the Execution of the above Deed for the purposes therein contained upon the 7th of February 1848, the private examination of Caroline Mase being taken according to act of assembly. This Indenture made this the Eighteenth day of September A.D. one thousand eight hundred and forty seven, between Joshua M. Trease, Jerriel D. Mays and Caroline Mays, his wife, formerly Caroline Treas, all of the County of Claiborne and State of Tennessee of the one part, and Greenberry Cloud of the County and State aforesaid of the other part, witnesseth that the said Joshua M. Trease, Jerriel D. Mays and Caroline Mays for and in consideration of the some (sic) of four hundred dollars to them in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath and by these presants doth hereby bargain sell alien enfeoff convey and confirm unto the said Greenberry Cloud and to his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Claiborne and State of Tenn, Waters of Powells River at the head of the middle fork of the Lonesome Valey being part of the tract of land on which Sam'l Cloud formerly lived - where the said Joshua M. Trease now lives - Beginning on two pines near the top of the ridge in what was formerly Edward Ashley's line, thence south seventy degrees west to a poplar marked H, thence on a conditional line formerly made between John Casey and James Casey, north westwardly to Jacob Cloud's corner in said line thence on sd. Jacob Cloud's line to Daren Cardwell's line, thence on said Cardwell's line southerly to the beginning, containing one hundred acres be the same more or less, to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land to the said Greenberry Cloud and to his heirs and assigns forever as an indefeasible inheritance in fee simple, and the said Joshua M. Trease, Jerriel D. Mays and Caroline Mays for themselves and their heirs doth covenant to and with the said Greenberry Cloud that they will forever, warrent and defend the rigt and title to said described tract of land against the lawful title claim or deamnd of all and every person or persons whatever. Johnson, Clerk of the County Court of said County, Nancy Trease, the feam in the above Deed, privately and apart from her said husband and who acknowledged that she executed the above deed freely, without compulsion from her husband, for the purposes therein contained upon the 2nd of Sept. 1848. This Indenture made this first day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty eight between Joshua M. Trease and his wife, Nancy Trease, formerly Nancy Mayes and daughter and one of the heirs at law of Thomas Mayes, deceased, both of the County of Claiborne and State of Tennessee of the one part, and Johnson Mayes of the same County and State of the other part, witnesseth that the said Joshua M. Trease and his said wife Nancy Trease, for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to them in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have and by these presents do hereby grant bargain sell alien and enfeoff and convey and confirm unto the said Johnson Mayes and to his heirs and assigns forever the undivided twelfth part of a certain tract of land in Claiborne County sixteen in number decended from Thomas Mayes decea'd to his heirs at law, twelve in number, to wit: said tracts of land composing the place where said Thomas Mayes lived, and on big barron Creek as the waters there off the first tract being a tract of two hundred acres conveyed to said Thomas Mayes by James W. Glasgow, by deed dated the 28th of May 1820 - the second tract being fifty acres conveyed by Isaac Owsley to Thomas Mayes by deed dated the 17th of April 1823 - the third being a tract of forty acres conveyed by Samuel Nichelson to said Thomas Mayes on the 9th day of September 1825 - the fourth being a tract of twelve acres conveyed by Samuel Nichelson to Thomas Mayes on the 16th day of January 1827 - the fifth being a tract of 25 acres conveyed by David Hibbert to Thomas Mayes on the 10th day of September 1839 - the sixth being a tract containing 80 acres conveyed by William Bridges and Thomas Bridges to said Thomas Mayes on the 25th day of February 1809 - the seventh being a tract of 40 acres conveyed by John Casey and Walter Evans to the said Thomas Mayes on the 28th day of July 1814 - the eight(h) being a tract of 40 acres conveyed by James Glasgow by his attorney John Adair to Thomas Mayes on the 27th day of September 1811. The ninth being a tract or half a tract conveyed by William Goin to Thomas Mayes and Thomas Bridges on the 31st day of August 1808, the tenth being a tract of twenty acres conveyed by Samuel Nichelson to Thomas Mayes on the 16th day of May 1825, the eleventh being a tract of land and a boundry conveyed (by) David Hibbert to Thomas Mayes on the 20th day of April 1839, and being fifty acres. The twelfth being a tract of ten acres conveyed by Jacob Peck by his attorney Adam C. Peck to Thomas Mayes on the 22nd day of November 1837. The thirteenth being a tract of ten acres conveyed by Jacob Peck, by his attorney William R. Peck, to Thomas Mayes on the 28th day of April 1839 - the fourteenth, being a tract of ten acres conveyed by Jacob Peck by his attorney Adam C. Peck to Thomas Mayes on the 6th day of August 1840. The fifteenth being a tract of 20 acres conveyed by Jacob Peck by his attorney William R. Peck to Thomas Mayes on the 28th day of April 1839 - the sixteenth being a tract conveyed by Jacob Peck, by his attorney Adam C. Peck to Thomas Mayes on the 20th day of January 1840 - and containing ten acres, and all of which tracts of land are yet undivided and reference is hereby made to the original deeds of conveyance or the records thereof for the more full and perfect description of said tracts of land and to run and be bounded as therein described to have and to hold said undivided one twelfth part of said tracts of land so far as said Thomas Mayes held title therein at the time of his death to the said Johnson Mayes and his heirs and assigns forever and the said Joshua M. Trease and his wife, Nancy Trease, for themselves and their heirs and assigns executors and . . . .

Johnson, Clerk of the County Court of said County, Nancy Trease, wife of the said Joshua M. Trease, the feam? covert, and having by virtue of the authority in me vested, been examined privately and apart from her said husband Joshua M. Trease, and she having acknowledged the due execution of the within deed by her freely, voluntarily, without compulsion, constraint or coercion by her said husband, the same is therefore certified.

This Indenture made and concluded this third day of October Anno Domini 1846, by and between Joshua M. Treece, and his wife, Nancy Treece formerly Nancy Mays, and Johnson Mays of Claiborne County in the State of Tennessee, and, William Baker and his wife Rachel Baker, formerly Rachel Mays of Hardin County in the State of Kentucky of the one part, and Joseph B. Morton of Lee County in the State of Virginia of the other part witnesseth, That the said Joshua M. Treece and his wife, Nancy, Johnson Mays, William Baker and his wife Rachel, for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to them in hand paid by the said Joseph B. Morton, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have and by these presents do bargain and sell, alien enfoeff confirm and convey to the said Joseph B. Morton and to his heirs forever in fee simple the three twelths undivided parts of said tract of land - And the said Joshua M. Treece and his wife Nancy, Johnson Mays, William Baker and his wife Rachel, do for themselves their heirs executors & administrators do covenant to and with the said Joseph B. This indenture made this 25 day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty nine, between Westley Stallings and his wife Elisabeth Stallings, formerly Elizabeth Maise daughter and one of the heirs at law of Thomas Maise decd, of the County of Jasper and State of Iowa, by their attorney John Stallings in fact, of the one part, and Lewis Harmon, of the County of Claiborne and State of Tennessee of the other part, witnesseth that the said Westley Stallings and his sd. wife by there attorney for and in consideration of the some of thirty five dollars to him in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath and by these presants doth bargain sell, alien, enfeoff, convey and confirm unto the said Lewis Harmon and to his heirs and assigns forever, one undivided twelfth part or sher in a certain tract or parcel of land lying in said County and being the place on which the said William Burch formerly lived and being a tract of land belonging to Thomas Maise Decd at the time of his death and now belonging to his heirs at law and bounded as follows, to wit: Beginning on the head waters of the Big Baron Creek beginning on two Spanish Oaks, the corner between Ashle's old sixty acre tract and ninety acre tract thence north twenty east forty poles to two hickries and a black oak on Kelley's, (line, thence North 31 west 100? State of Iowa) SS: Jasper County) Be it remembered that on the twenty second day of October in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and Forty nine, personally came Wesley Stallings and Elizabeth Stallings, his wife (before me Jesse Rickman, Dept. Clerk of the District Court in and for said County) who is personally known to me to be the persons whose signatures appear on the within and foregoing Indenture, and acknowledged the same to be of their own free will and accord for the purposes therein named and the said Elizabeth Stallins being made acquainted with the contents, separate and apart from her husband, acknowledged the same to be of her own free will and accord and not through fear coertion or compultion of her husband or any person whomsoever.

This Indenture made the 28th day of April in the year eighteen hundred & seventeen between Griffin Stallings of the County of Claiborne State of Tennessee of the one part and William Stallings of the same place of the other part. Witnesseth that the sd. Griffin Stallings for the consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars to him in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath and by these presents doth give grant bargain sell & convey unto the sd. William Stallings his heirs & assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred acres more or less lying & being in the County of Claiborne. Beginning at two black oaks or spanish oaks, running north ten poles to a stake in the middle of the spring branch running up the middle of sd. branch dividing the water equally to a dogwood above the head of the spring, then north thirty five Ds. west fifteen poles to a stake then North 80 Ds. West fifty poles to a stake on the original line, then north ten Ds. west sixty poles to a poplar, then due east one hundred and sixty poles to a double black oak from thence to the beginning. To have and to hold aforesaid tract of land with all & singular the rights profits emoluments hereditaments and appurtenances whatsoever to the sd. tract of land belonging or appertaining to the only proper use & behoof of him the sd. Willam Stallings his heirs & assigns forever and against the lawful title claim and demand of him the sd. Griffin Stallins his heirs or any persons claiming through or under him will warrant & forever defend. In witness whereof the sd. Griffin Stallings hath hereunto set his hand & seal the day & year above written.
