HCG&HS INFORMATION

Hawkins County Genealogical & Historical Society was begun in September 1983 with 7 people present. Dues were set and officers were elected and plans were set in motion for writing a charter, starting a society publication, and deciding on a project that would relate to our purpose of preserving records of Hawkins County. Our quarterly publication, DISTANT CROSSROADS, grew from 4 pages to its current size of 32 pages. HCG&HS is a registered, nonprofit organization.

The 1983 Charter Members & Officers:
President - Fred Robbins
Vice-President - Peggy Cook
Recording Secretary - Haynes Alvis
Corresponding Secretary - Carolyn Gardner
Treasurer - Evelyn Carpenter
Historian - Bernice Williams
Researcher - Opal Alvis

In addition to preserving Hawkins County records, it was the aim of the Society to make these and other historical records available to the public. As Hawkins County was the crossroads of immigration from the east coast to the western territories and states, we have purchased books and microfilm recording the history and genealogical information of the predominate states involved. With the revenue from the sale of our own publications, we have donated more than $18,000 to date to the H. B. Stamps Memorial Library in Rogersville, Tennessee. We have spent approximately $13,000 for shelving and equipment, such as microfilm readers, for the library.

The Hawkins County Genealogical & Historical Society is an affiliate member of East Tennessee Historical Society. We cooperate with many other societies by exchanging quarterly journals. We donate a copy of all our publications to Tennessee State Archives and U. S. Library of Congress. Members participate by submitting queries and donating material to be published in DISTANT CROSSROADS and to be placed in the library. Many have authored & donated family history books to the library. All DISTANT CROSSROADS have been bound and placed in the library. Currently we are binding journals from other societies.

Please be aware that HCG&HS is a volunteer organization, with limited resources. We cannot answer every email, nor do research for every request. Members can post queries in DISTANT CROSSROADS or on the website Bulletin Board pages.
