Henry L. Grayson comes of a family well and favorably known throughout Ouachita County, for his father settled
here in 1859, and here Henry has since made his home. He was born in Hamilton County, Tennessee, January 21,
1839, and is a son of John and Sarah (Frix) Grayson, the former having been born in Tennessee in 1807. He was a
farmer by occupation and for a number of years was deputy sheriff in Tennessee. In 1859 he emigrated from there
to Ouachita County, Arkansas and purchased 500 acres of land to which he afterward, by industry and good
management, added some 400 acres more. He was a Mason and his wife was an earnest member of the Methodist
Episcopal Church, and their deaths occurred in 1881 and 1875, respectively. To them a family of five sons and four
daughters were born, six of whom are now living: Mary A. (wife of William Donaldson, a farmer of Washington),
Martha J. (wife of James M. Douglas, a farmer of Ouachita County), Henry L., George W. (a farmer of Clark
County, Arkansas), Thomas J. ( a farmer of Ouachita County), and Zechariah T., who is the present postmaster of
Prescott, Nevada County, Arkansas. Henry L. Grayson, the subject of this sketch, came to Arkansas with his
parents and was married here to Miss Elizabeth Webb in 1866, his wife being a native of Tennessee, born in 1843,
a daughter of Anderson and Martha Webb, also of that State. A family of four sons and four daughters were born
to Mr. and Mrs. Grayson: Albert S., Edward C., Virginia O., Lewis N., Eudora, Hesterly, Essie P. and Jessie E. In
1861 Mr. Grayson enlisted in Company H, Arkansas Infantry, and was in the battles of Shiloh, Missionary Ridge
and numerous skirmishes, and in the first named battle was shot through the left breast and had one finger shot
off. He continued to served until 1864, then returned home and engaged in farming and ginning cotton, which
occupations have received his attention ever since. He has been more than ordinarily successful, and is now the
owner of 1,500 acres of fine farming land and has 250 acres in a good state of cultivation, his principal crops being
cotton and corn. He has an excellent steam cotton and grist mill combined which has proved quite remunerative,
and every enterprise which has received his attention has been attended with good results. He is now engaged in
conducting a grocery store at the cross roads where he lives, and is pushing quite a thriving trade. In 1868 he was
appointed assessor of his county and discharged the duties of this position for one year. He is a member of the R.
A., and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Published in the Goodspeed Biographical & Historical Memoirs of Southern Arkasnas, 1890.

I am looking for my wife's mother's father Edwin Malcom Janes.
It is reported that he was born in 1896 in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee. He moved to Ohio and married Mary Louise Martin about 1919 he died April 18, 1926 when his daughter Elsie Louise Janes was 3 months old.
------------
The following is transcribed from either the Cleveland Press, or the Cleveland Plain Dealer :
E. M. JANES RITE HELD TUESDAY
---
Children Pay Honors to Heights Traffic Patrolman
---
Funeral services for Edwin M. Janes, motorcycle patrolman in Shaker Heights, were held from the residence of his father-in-law, 4140 E. 113th street, last Tuesday. Janes was killed last week when his motorcycle collided with a machine at the corner of South Woodland and Montgomery roads.
He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., and came to Cleveland in 1916. He joined the Shaker Heights police force a year ago. Seven years ago he married Miss Mary Louise Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. Martin, 4140 E. 113th street. They made their home at 11815 Miles avenue.
A delegation of school children from the Shaker Heights school attended the funeral. Six patrolmen from the Heights police department acted as pall bearers. Mayor W. J. Van Aiken and Police Chief Irvin also attended the rites.
Besides his wife he is also survived by his eleven weeks' old daughter, Elsie Louise. In terment was at Highland Park cemetery. Rev. A. C. Ludlow and Rev. Roland Bahnsen officiated.

The following is transcribed from either The Cleveland Press, or The Cleveland Plain Dealer published Tuesday April 20, 1926 (note error in headline JONES / JANES) :
CHILDREN MOURN LOSS OF FRIEND OFFICER JONES
---
Funeral Tuesday for Patrolman Killed as Motorcycle and Auto Collide
---
Some day when Elsie Louise Janes grows up the older children will tell her what a wonderful policemen her daddy, Edwin Malcom Janes, was.
They'll tell her how he guarded them on their way to and from school at Montgomery road and South Woodland, Shaker Heights.
"We called him 'Doc'" said Ruth Pendergast, 3122 Woodbury road. "He was just fine. Many times last last winter he'd take us home in his auto when the weather was bad. Now he is gone and we miss him so."
"And how he did love to turn the rope for us," added Mary Louise Franklin, Margaret Alice Koelling and Benita Harrison Blair, just a few of Patrolman Janes' many little friends.
Patrolman Janes of the Shaker Heights Police Department was killed Sunday when his motorcycle collided with an auto near the school where he had served in the past two years.
He had been married seven years and has one child, Elsie Louise, just 10 weeks old. His wife is prostrated.
"Patrolman Janes was a conscientious man," said Chief John K. Irvin of the Shaker Heights Police Department. "He had just one weakness -- He became overzealous in his interest in the children. He became the strictest officer when it came to guarding his children."
Pennies destined for sweets and marbles found their way into the school Monday for flowers for "Doc," the final tribute of the sad-eyed youngsters who gazed wistfully at the spot where he used to stand.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the home of Mrs. Janes parents, 4140 E. 113th street. Six uniformed patrolmen acted as pallbearers, while a guard of honor of nine firemen assisted. Burial was at Highland Park Cemetery.
Janes was 30, and a native of Chattanooga, Tenn.,where he served in the state calvalry until coming to Cleveland two years ago.
