The Rocks Church Cemetery
Burial List
|
INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM PAMPHLET DISTRIBUTED
AT CHURCH ISLAND REUNION.
|
What follows is a list of the
known burials in Rock's Church Cemetery which has been compiled from the
Burial Registers of Epiphany Church and a visual inspection of the actual
gravestones during restoration.
|
| Of special interest is listing
#3, a Mr. George Benisco, who appears to have been the first burial in
this cemetery in November of 1807. This indicates that plans were already
well underway and the land already secured at this date for the relocation
of the church from Rock's Plantation to land belonging to Springfield Plantation.
Mr. Benisco's headstone has not well survived the ravishes of time. The
sugaring remains of his headstone can be found in the EAST CENTRAL section
of the cemetery marked with a small red flag. |
| Also of interest is listing
#56, the grave of Mr. James Samuel Gaillard, who died on February 7, 1942
at age 84 years, 11 months and 19 days and was buried on February 9, 1942.
The site of his headstone will be found in the WEST CENTRAL section of
the cemetery near the fence and in view of the waters of Lake Marion. His
was the last interment in the cemetery, as the slowly rising waters of
the Santee River soon rose to form the new Lake Marion and create this
Church Island, as a hollowed time capsule, separated from the activity
and development of the mainland and sacred to the memory of the faith and
courage of the men, women and children who heroically settled this great
area. |
| Another special headstone, which
stands as a testament to the great love the people had for their land and
their personal struggle in having to give it up to the "Santee-Cooper"
Development is listing #126, the grave of Mr. Joseph Palmer Simons
of Pond Bluff Plantation. Pond Bluff had been given to the Simons family
by the widow of General Francis Marion in appreciation for their service
and protection afforded her while the general was away fighting the Revolutionary
War. Mr. Simons had tenaciously refused to voluntarily surrender his land
and dauntlessly resisted condemnation procedures. The courts, however,
ruled against him, but the thought of giving up his home and land was more
that Mr. Joe could endure. So on July 7, 1939 he entered the home for the
last time, put a handgun to his head and released his last breath in Pond
Bluff Plantation, which he so dearly loved. He was buried from the Rock's
Church on July 8, 1939 and his mortal remains now lie at rest in Church
Island Cemetery within view of the waters of Lake Marion which now cover
his beloved Pond Bluff Plantation. His headstone will be found in the SOUTH
WEST section of the cemetery near the fence. |
| And finally, a rather humorous
story, as related by Miss Marguerite Couturier Steedman, of Holly Hill,
concerning listing number #156, the headstone of her "Great Grandma," Mrs.
Emma Julia Steedman, located just in the Northeast quadrant and directly
behind the raised brick tomb of her dear father, Mr. Elias F. Couturier
(listing #13). |
| When Mrs. Emma was buried her
family, who were living in Atlanta, commissioned a monument firm in the
City of Charleston to make her headstone. After years of correspondence
between the family in Atlanta and the Charleston firm, which offered excuse
after excuse for the disconcerting delay, it was learned that the owner
of the firm had disappeared from Charleston taking with him the meager
liquid assets of the company, which included the payment for Mrs. Emma's
headstone. |
| The family then contacted a
monument firm in Atlanta, who promptly executed a simple but dignified
headstone with the appropriate phrase "Blessed are the pure in heart."
With the headstone completed, the family now faced the problem of getting
it all the way to Rock's Church in South Carolina and erected at the grave
site. After exploring the few possible options, it was decided to personally
deliver and oversee it's installation. |
| So early one morning in 1924
young Marguerite and her mother boarded their open green Essex Touring
car, with the headstone on the rear floor, one suitcase on the seat and
the family collie atop the headstone to steady it, heading for Eutawville,
South Carolina. Late that night, after several stops to seek direction,
they drove their last mile, down the impressive entrance to Lawson's Pond
Plantation, the home of her Father's cousin, "Pum" Couturier. |
| The next morning Mr. Couturier
called his friend "Dick" Kirk of Mt. Pleasant Plantation and they all drove
to The Rock's Church and set in place the headstone of Mrs. Emma Julia
Steedman. The rest of the day was spent at Lawson's Pond Plantation, where
young Marguerite got to know and love her South Carolina cousins. The next
day, the great adventure successfully completed, young Marguerite and her
mother made the long drive back to Atlanta, content that Mrs. Emma Julia
Steedman was proud of her progeny. |
