4 Sept. 1879
- Bernice On Aug. 28th John FARRER,
the oldest miner on the bank, was working
in his place taking out the top coal, and
was killed by a large rock falling upon
him. Funeral services were held Sunday
afternoon, with the miners contributing
over sixty dollars toward defraying the
funeral expenses.
- LAPORTE Frank F. DRAKE is the
happiest man in town cause why,
baby boy.
11 September
1879
- John CARMAN, former resident of
Huntington Twp., this county, died at the
city hospital, Wilkes Barre on Monday
his remains were conveyed through
town on Wed. for interment at Cambria.
- Elsie S., daughter of Samuel and Rosa E.
YAW, died in Elkland, Sullivan Co., on
Sept. 2nd, aged 3 months and 7 days.
- A. J. LLOYD, a prominent and respected
citizen of Wyalusing met with a singular
and fatal accident Thursday afternoon.
The family went out except Mr. Lloyd who
had complained of feeling quite badly,
and particularly dizzy. Mrs. Lloyd had
left about 4 pm and when she returned at
5:15 pm, she found her husband in a well
in the cellar, head downward, the well
being only about 3 ½ feet deep, and
containing about six inches of water. One
arm was down in the well and under him a
dipper, as if reaching for water and fell
in. On the kitchen table stood a camphor
bottle and by it a newspaper, on the
margin of which was written the words
"So deathly sick; how strange I
feel; I cannot live long; Hamlin be good
to your mother, and your grand parents.
Meet me in Heaven." It seems that
being taken suddenly worse, he went to
the water pail, which being empty, he
went down to the well in the cellar for
water, and while reaching down to dip it
up fell in and was unable to extricate
himself.
25 September
1879
- John HURLEY died in Standing Stone Twp.,
on Wed. morning of last week. He was born
in Ireland in Dec. 1773, and was
consequently at the time of his death
lacking but three months of being one
hundred and six years of age.
- Mr. THOMPSON, a veteran of 86, residing
near Berwick, took a solitary drive over
the mountain on Friday to visit his son,
James, and family living in Dushore. The
old gentleman started home again on
Monday.
- Benjamin SAYMAN and Miss Elizabeth, d/o
Jonathan SHAFFER, were married at the
home of the bride's father in Forks, by
S. Bedford, on Sept. 8th
- Joseph LEE of Overton, Bradford Co. and
Miss Harriet HAKES, of Evergreen,
Bradford Co., were married at the
parsonage in Millview, Sept. 17th by S.
Bedford
- Thomas BROWN, died at his residence in
Elkland, Sullivan Co., Sept. 14th, in the
70th year of his age. He came from
England to this country when he was six
years old and has lived since that time
not far from where he died. His funeral
was on Tuesday following his death and
layed to rest in the cemetery near
Forksville. He had been married 43 years
widow survives.
- New Salem Thomas BROWN died
Sunday, Sept. 14th, aged 69 years
2 October 1879
- William P. BAGLEY, of Hills Grove and
Miss Mariah BROWN of Shunk, were married
at the W. M. parsonage, Millview, Sept.
18th by S. Bedford
- Hartley, s/o William and Ellen BLACK, of
Elkland, died Sept. 28th, in the sixth
year of his age. His funeral was attended
in the afternoon the following day by
many neighbors and relatives.
- Infant daughter of John and Mary UTZ,
died Monday, Sept. 29th, after an illness
covering the entire period of its short
life 5 or 6 months. Funeral was
Wednesday at Thrasher's Cemetery.
- Joshua VANLOON, one of the oldest
citizens of Albany Twp., was found dead
in his saw mill on Friday. He had been
working along and sometime before noon it
was noticed that the saw was stopped. The
cause was from disease of the heart. He
was 72 years old (Towanda Review)
- Millview W. T. PARDOE and wife
have a baby boy
- Millview William KAY, is
constantly failing in health, looks as
though he might not live long, he is over
70 years old
9 October
1879
- Jeremiah NEVIL, of Shrewsbury, died last
week from the effects of a wound received
during the late war. He was a member of a
regiment of this state and while in the
discharge of his duty as a soldier
received the wound that finally
terminated in his death many years
afterwards. He was a native of the
county. He was 47 years of age and leaves
a wife and five children.
- Mrs. Sarah BARTCH, w/o Gotleib F., of
Cherry Twp. died on 5th inst, aged about
62 years from the effects of a cancer of
the stomach. Her remains were followed by
a large circle of relatives and friends
to the Thrasher cemetery on Tuesday
- A monument to Capt. John Brady arrived at
Muncy Thursday and men are busy putting
it up in the cemetery . It is of solid
granite, in four parts each of
which weighs from five to eight tons.
When erected it will be about 35 feet
high. Mr. Walter Losch of Allentown, the
sculptor has personal charge of its
erection. The whole cost about $1700.
Extensive preparations are going forward
for the ceremony of the unveiling on the
15th inst.
- The new church at North Mountain,
Davidson Twp., will be dedicated on
Sunday, Nov. 2nd. Rev. HUNTER, of
Lewisburg is expected to preach the
dedication sermon. He will be assisted by
Rev. J. F. SHULTZ, minister in charge.
16 Oct. 1879
- Mr. Geo. A. CAMPBELL, of East Troy, but
formerly a shoemaker in Canton, died of
heart disease on a Union Pacific train
while on his way to San Francisco CA
recently.
- Peter MC MANUS, a Mollie Maguire, was
hanged today (Oct. 9th at Sunbury), for
the murder of Coroner HESSER in 1874.
O'NEIL who was to have been hanged with
him, was informed this morning of his
reprieve. His declaration was made and
signed in the presence of Father KOCH and
others, in which he states he exonerates
O'NEIL and himself and implicates CANNING
and RHOADES, two of the Commonwealth
witnesses.
23 Oct.
1879
- At Trinity Church, Geneva, NY, Oct. 15th,
by Rev. R. E. Dennison, assisted by Rev.
H W. Nelson and Rev. M. Van Rensseleaer,
DD, Wm. A. BURDETT Esq., of NY, to Miss
Martha J. DENNISON,
- Thomas SHIELDS, died at Bernice, Oct.
21st, aged 78 years 9 months and 15 days.
The remains were taken to Lee Settlement
for burial on Wednesday.
30 Oct. 1879
- George YOUNG on Thursday, 23rd, in
the North Mountain neighborhood of
Davidson Twp., died. William A. SPEARMAN,
over 60 years, came here from Brooklyn,
NY. Belonging to his household was his
wife, daughter and her husband and a
hired man, Mr. Young. The father had been
under the influence of drink and
assaulted his daughter. Her husband
interfered when Spearman chased him away
with a revolver. Just at that time Young
came upon the scene, and took sides with
the family, he was hit on the head with a
club by the old man but got away and ran
out side the door yard gate followed by
Spearman. Spearman shot him, pierced
through the head. And lived less than an
hour. Spearman is now in jail at LaPorte,
his trial will take place in December.
- J. V. RETTENBURY, of Dushore and Miss
Bernice KELLOGG, of Monroeton, were
married in Monroeton on Oct. 28 by Rev.
Dr. Taylor.
