St. Vladimir's Orthodox Cemetery
Lopez, PA

New Cemetery: December 15, 2001
Old Cemetery: September 2002

St. Vladimir's Orthodox Cemetery
The "New" Graveyard
Photo Taken by Mike and Debbie Krause

We are indebted to our local cemetery research team for the transcription of the "New" cemetery. There are some grave stones here written in Cyrillic script that are not accounted for in Tina's listing, due to the language barrier. In September 2002, Mike and Debbie Krause, assisted by the Reverend Michael Thier, arranged for a transcription of the Russian stones in the "Old" cemetery as a grouping. They are provided at the end of this transcription. A picture of the old cemetery area is also attached at the beginning of the section on the "Old" cemetery below. This old graveyard is actually a totally seperate cemetery seperated by several miles of highway from the new graveyard. According to Father Thier, the "Old" cemetery was given up quite a number of years ago because of the persistent wet conditions that caused the stones and most likely the caskets/vaults to be pushed up slightly to the surface.

We would happily provide additional listings should names and translated inscription be provided. We have added a field note after each listing below, in those cases where additional information has been submitted.

ST. VLADIMIIR’S ORTHODOX CEMETERY
LOPEZ, PA
Located on "Jackson Hill" (State Route 487), approximately one mile southeast of the town of Lopez, on the east side of the road.

ST. VLADIMIRS RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CEMETERY–OLD 1910

Located at the east end of Twp. Rd. #T398, Turreltown Road at the edge of an open field. It is the first "street" on your left as you turn onto Main Street from Route 487. Overlooks Lopez Creek and the former site of the Trexel and Turrell sawmill and lumber operations.

Note: Father Michael Thier, the resident priest at the church, assisted with translating the Russian/Cyrillic lettering. Many of the names inscribed in Russian could be translated somewhat differently, as noted on the attached transcription. The names can be translated a little differently by different people, or may vary according to the region in Russia where one may come from. Father Thier also asserted that many Russan names had been "Anglicized" by the immigrants' employers. Many of the local immigrants came to Sullivan County to work in either the lumber or mining business. So many of the given names at birth may not be what their descendants are using today. This could be a real dilemma for researchers, if their are few records or living relatives that can reveal the original given names..

** Editor's Note: In May 2008, Bob Logan contributed the following information on Theodore Shymansky, his family and the circumstances of his demise. We are grateful for Bob's material:

Bob McGuire and I have been working together, mostly he supplying information to me in writing my mother’s family history. They were residents of Lopez from (about) 1907 to 1918. My mother, Anna Shymansky Logan spent her growing up years in Lopez. Mom’s father was Theodore Shymansky (note spelling), who was killed in a tunnel collapse at the big Murray Colliery just north of Lopez in 1909. Bob McGuire alerted me to your St. Vladimir’s Cemetery directory. Grandfather (“Dedo” or Dedushka in Russian) is buried in the old St. Vladimir’s Cemetery; his tomb stone is at the foot of the big cedar tree, right behind the gate. It is the only stone with the inscription that faces east; the rest all face west. We think the stone fell over, and some kind soul replaced it, not noticing which way the stone faced.> Note that the name is spelled (taken from the grave stone in the old cemetery) Theodore "Shymansky", not "Shemanski". Oddly enough, his grandson, also Theodore, son of Maximos (Max) Shymansky (my mother’s older brother) chose to spell his name “Shemanski”. The rest of the family always spelled it “Shymansky”. I’m told that the US Army is responsible for the misspelling. I'm told by a cousin in law, who married Max's youngest daughter, that Max, one of Theodore's sons, would get almost violent if someone spelled it wrong. Be advised! If they would return, you might have some trouble. I have a feeling that they were a rough bunch at times. One of them, Maximos (Max, for short) was jailed for beating up one of the town roughs who insulted his heavy-set sister, Julia. I remember her well; she was a sweetheart! As I understand, a last name ending in “I” indicates Polish or Slovak ancestry. A ‘Y’ indicates Russian ancestry, although the territory Theodore migrated from is now in southwestern Poland, as the result of the League of Nations (WW I) decision to create a homeland for the Poles = Poland. The family book, yet to be published, has much more information.

Here is the particular information:

Theodore Shymansky was born 1873, emigrated from the Ukraine (part of old Russia) probably in 1889, was naturalized about 1894 (with two other brothers), and was injured in the late afternoon of January 22, 1909 in a mine tunnel collapse at the Murray Colliery, just north of Lopez, and died January 23, 1909 at Sayre Hospital. He apparently was buried on January 27, 1909, according to the website chart. I’m grateful for the cemetery listing burial dates. We did not have that information before. I’ll pass this on to my cohort Mark Regulski at Nanticoke, who is authoring the book with me. We hope to publish it by summer of 2008, limited edition.
