The BOLLES CEMETERY

BEECH GROVE/WHIPPLE/FULLER

By Carol Hoose Brotzman

brotzmans@epix.net or carolbrotzman@hotmail.com

Originally known as the Whipple/Fuller Cemetery Or Beech Grove Cemetery

It is located on Taylor Hill, Auburn Township Susquehanna County, PA.

The records were loaned to me, Carol Hoose Brotzman, by Mrs. Anna Labzentis Bolles August 22, 1999. Anna, and her deceased husband Robert Bolles (1926 – 1998) obtained the records through Robert’s adopted father, Leo Bolles (1887 – 1959). He was a noted early historian of the area, kept diaries and notes on just about everything. **He was in possession of the original documents. These documents show the original owners of the land were Jonas Fuller and Cyrus Whipple, thus the name Whipple or Fuller Cemetery. The land was surveyed June 25, 1853. It was paid for by donations of the Trustees. The surveyor was John Sturdevant.
** Editor's Note: You can see more pictures and learn more about the Bolles family at The Leo Bolles Collection.
There is also a comprehensive site on the Fuller family developed by Joe Payne, which you can access at Fullers Pond Family Tree.

The land recordings were as follows:

Cyrus Whipple 287 degrees Jonas Fuller 369 degrees

Cut in sections with the road on the front edge

3.8 to Cyrus and 4.2 to Jonas

The grounds were to contain 65.6 perches

CLINK, Adam                                        22 October 1808-5 June 1888 (This data from a cemetery listing at Montrose Historical Society) His wife was a widow in 1880 census? On 1870 Auburn Census his wife is alive and residing with her son Milton and his family.  I also have a birthdate of October 22, 1804 in Steuben, Oneida County, New York from many Roots Web family trees. I will cite the Phillip Sweet research which shows him on1860 Auburn Township census and then not again.  His widow is there Auburn Township, Susquehanna County, PA in 1870 and 1880 but not Adam. 1880 records she is a widow. He was the son of William and Margaret J. Hanson Clink. He married Mary Hulbert who is buried here with him.

CLINK, Mary                                        illegible dates, stone broke, wife of Adam Clink

Mary Hulbert Clink was born about 1807- 1809 according to various family records. Philip Sweet recorded her death date as November 18, 1861, dying in Laceyville, PA. She was the daughter of Benjamin Clink and his wife the former Miss Smith. She is on the 1870 census Auburn Township with no husband. Mary is residing with her son Milton’s family and her daughter Adeline. She is in the same place on 1880 census so she is clearly alive and some one has an error. She is recorded as being a widow. Phillip obtained his data from the listing of the Bolles Cemetery. What I think has happened is the transcriber of the cemetery transposed the records for Adam and Mary. NO PROOF!

CRAWFORD, Benjamin C.       (December 6, 1793) 1794-1885 (March 18)

As a Crawford Family Historian, I can say Benjamin C. (Maybe for Carpenter) Crawford was born in Wyalusing to Benjamin Noah and Olive (Olivia) Carpenter Crawford December 6, 1793 and passed at Beech Grove, Auburn Twp. Susquehanna County, PA March 18, 1885. He married first to Esther Jayne (October 06, 1794 – before 1830) daughter of David and Mary (Polly) Berry Jayne. They were the parents of six children before she died at Vosburg, PA where she is probably buried. He married second in 1832 to Catherine Bunnell Carney, the widow of Dr. Elijah Carney. She bore him one son named Benjamin Carney. Catherine was the daughter of Benjamin and Catherine Berry Bunnell. With Benjamin Crawford she bore four children, Charles and Gershom buried here, and Esther and Alpheus Crawford.

CRAWFORD, Catherine (Bunnell), (March 13) 1797 – 1892 (February 20)

In regards to these Crawford’s I have some interesting newspaper articles I would like to include:

FOUR SCORE AND TEN - a reprint from newspaper article originally published ca 1882.

Benjamin C. (Carpenter) Crawford, father of John Crawford late of Washington twp (Township) and grandfather of Wesley D. Crawford of this place, was in town on Monday last. He was born at Wyalusing then Luzerne and now Bradford County, on the sixth day of December, 1793, and he is consequently now, nearly 89 years of age. He was in Tunkhannock for the first time seventy-three years ago, being then sixteen years old. At that time there were but three buildings here, one was a tavern near where the Keeler House now is, one was a store kept by the Suttle Bros., and a salt house. The Whitmore House and one other house and tavern were kept near where the old bridge crosses the Tunkhannock Creek.

He was drafted in the war of 1812 and was excused from service by reason of the influence of his employer with the captain of the company. Old Joseph Camp was the captain of the company with whom many of his associates went to war. (Likely a relative of Lydia Ann Camp b 1825 who married George M. Crawford b 1825, a brother of Betsey Ann who married Squire L.W. Clark, Leonard’s Great-grandparents)

He has been married twice, and has his wife last yet living with him at his home in Auburn twp., Susquehanna County (Penn) aged 86 years. His wife is a sister of the late John Bunnell. Both are in good health and apparently will live many years yet.

His father (Benjamin Noah Crawford) and mother (Olive Carpenter) were born in Danby, Connecticut. His father was in the Revolutionary War and after the war was over, he came to Wyoming (County, Penn) and was there at the time of the Pumpkin freshet and shortly after moved to Wyalusing. After his father had lived there one season he had gathered his crops, which were raised on the island of Wyalusing and had stored them in his house, it was consumed by fire. His father then moved to Frenchtown. Here he worked in making pork and cider barrels which he marketed at Kingston and Wilkes Barre. They were transported by floating them by the side of his canoe. He bought grain with the proceeds of his barrels, which he had ground at Shoemaker’s mills, about ten miles this side of Wilkes Barre and loaded to his canoe and (brought) it back to Wyalusing. His father lived three years at Wyalusing and then moved down the river about 3 miles to a place called Fleatown. There the subject of this sketch (Benjamin Carpenter Crawford) was born (1793) in a log house built by his father. His father died there when Benjamin was but ten years of age, leaving the widow and ten children, Benjamin being the fifth child. He lived on Russell Hill about fifteen years. He has followed shoemaking his whole lifetime and began to

learn his trade before he was seventeen years old. He has not taken a drink of liquor in forty-four years and had been temperate in his habits before that time. He commenced chewing tobacco at the age of eighteen and has used it moderately ever since. He was advised to use it by old Dr. Hayes for a pain in his stomach occasioned by the sewing of shoes. In those days, viz. In 1813 pegs were not used in making shoes. (An interesting comment. Apparently the shoemaker held the shoe against his stomach while shaping the leather and sewing it)

The old man has a remarkable memory, is keen and witty and remarkable in many respects.

(In handwriting on newspaper, possibly his son’s: "Died March 18, 1885")

From a Susquehanna Co., Pa., history, chapter on Auburn Twp., re. Benjamin Carpenter Crawford [Benjamin Jr.]:

"In the same locality Benjamin C. Crawford began clearing a farm in April, 1832, and it is claimed that he had the first cabin in this part of Auburn.  His nearest neighbors were George Mowry on the south and Abraham Lott on the north.  The first night he slept on his land his bed was made of hemlock boughs, and his slumbers were very much disturbed by the hooting of owls and the yelping of wolves.  The latter ventured so near him that his life was endangered.  He prepared the logs for his cabin in one day, and with the assistance of a few neighbors, rolled up the walls of his pioneer home.  The following day, with the help of a neighbor, he made the shingles for the roof, and boards becoming scarce, he took the boards belonging to his sled to make a door.  Benjamin C. Crawford died on his homestead, March 18, 1885, in the ninety-second year of his age.  For nearly seventy-six years of his life he was a professed Christian, and helped to advance the religious interests of the township by his consistent life and praiseworthy conduct."

CRAWFORD, Charles F. (T?)  died 1 July 1865 GAR 1861-65

The stone is broken, laying on the ground in more than one piece. It was one of those tall narrowing pillar types. He was born the son of Benjamin F. and Catherine Bunnell Crawford in 1835. He married Sarah Wrisley. They were the parents of one child according to 1860 Auburn census. Her name was Eliza L. Crawford born about 1857. She does not appear on 1870 census; maybe she passed and is one of those flagstone markers near the headstone of Charles Crawford. I do not know. His stone is on the left hand side of the cemetery in the rear corner. Angeline Place Hunter records this story: “Sarah Elizabeth Wrisley's first husband Charles Crawford.  He was in the Civil War, as the story goes, he sent word that he was coming home on leave. She got his clean clothes out, cooked all his favorite foods and invited his friends and relatives in. He didn't come and didn't come. Then they heard a wagon coming up the lane. Charles was dead. He died of dysentery on the way home. (Now, I know that lots of family membes tell the same story but this is what my mother told me.)” His wife married second to George T. Place and is buried with him in the Jersey Hill Cemetery.
