The Historical Society offers a variety of resources to aid the genealogist in their search for their ancestors. While some are HSSC reprints or publications and are available for purchase; others may be viewed in the library such as: maps, microfilms, newspapers and more. Below is an idea of what we carry in the various categories.
The well-stocked library of the Society has a wide variety of publications on the history of the county. Subjects covered in the library include: Canals, anthracite coal mining, Civil War, city directories, family histories, town, borough and township histories, military and railroads. We are currently taking inventory of our books, which enable us to better serve your needs both on and off site. We invite you to take advantage of our library, and use the researchers room in your quest.
The Society has original newspapers of Schuylkill County in its collections dating from the 1820's. These include the Pottsville Miners Journal, which was started in 1825, German language newspapers from the 1830's through the 1860's that were published in Pottsville, the Pottsville Evening Chronicle from 1875 to 1905, the Shenandoah Herald that was started in 1870 and much more.
The microfilm collection includes the Pottsville Miners Journal newspaper from 1825 to its demise in 1953 when it was known as the Pottsville Journal, every issue of the Pottsville Republican from its beginning in 1884, census records dating from 1790 to 1920, various county newspapers, and passenger lists of vessels bringing immigrants to the United States.
Peter Shaefer and Heber Thompson were two of the early mining engineers in the county. The Society has many of their anthracite coal mine maps in its very extensive collection
The Society has a rich collection of manuscripts covering many subjects of county history. These materials reveal the history of the early townships and the development of the anthracite coal industry. Many of the manuscripts are original documents and others are written on many subjects of historical interest in the county.
The Society has a very important collection of genealogical materials. Church records, family records, and geneaological publications by various groups comprise this important segment of the collections.
