Re: Proposal: Establish Special Fund: "Bedford County Historical Center"

Date: 10 January 2006

Dear Members,

I respectfully submit and request your approval on the following proposal.

Proposal No. 5, WRM (BCHS)

Background:

There are people in Bedford County who have artifacts and/ or money that they would be willing to donate to the Bedford County Historical Society. This would also include making the BCHS a beneficiary in their will. There is a reluctance to do so, unless there are some guarantees.

There are people, such as myself, that would like to see a "special fund" created for a "center" through the Bedford County Historical Society.

There are always a number of steps and stages involved in having an idea actually become a reality. The second step never happens without the first being taken.

Documentation of stipulations and/ or guide lines must be handled through legal assistance.

Aspirations:

The Bedford County Historical Society will be the premier curator of Bedford County's history and heritage by establishing a "center."

The "center" will be both structural and operational. Historical records and artifacts will be securely housed and exhibited under appropriate environmental conditions.

The "center" will facilitate local access, accessions, and study for the people of Bedford County.

The focus will emulate "Bedford County Pride," by interrelating the "parts" to the "whole" of Bedford County.

Request:

As a first step, I am requesting that the Bedford County Historical Society establishes a "Special Fund for a "Bedford County Historical Center."

The "Special Fund for the Center" must have qualifications and stipulations as to how both monetary and artifact donations will be handled.

All legal based issues concerning the "center" and all types of donations for such be handled through the services of an attorney.

Once legal issues and stipulations are in place, that monetary donations are solicited from individuals, businesses, etc.
Ramifications:

Call attention to the role Bedford County, Pennsylvania played at both the state and national levels.

The "center" of the Bedford County Historical Society to be the "hub" of the wheel and interrelate all parts of Bedford County and unite it into one entity.

Not only a major tourist attraction, but an educational center.

Stimulate the donation of money and/ or artifacts through recognition of family heritage and involvement.

The "center" would stimulate the economy of Bedford County,

Keep Bedford County history and heritage in Bedford County,

Heighten: Bedford County Pride,

Stimulate interest in Bedford County Historical Society,

Increase membership in the Bedford County Historical Society.
