Historical Marker to be Dedicated in Clymer
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County have announced plans for the dedication of a new state historical marker. The marker commemorates Dr. Robert Mitchell of Indiana, a leader of the Underground Railroad, and five fugitive slaves who were sleeping in a log cabin owned by Mitchell in what is now Clymer, then Green Township. Clarence Stephenson, renowned county historian, conducted the research and applied for the marker on behalf of the Historical Society. The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony, which will take place on Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at 4:00 p.m. on Rt. 286, Highway East in Clymer.

Rescue of Richard Newman, 1858, presented during Diamond DaysSponsored by the NATIONAL PARK SERVICE Underground Railroad Network to Freedom and the Blairsville Passport to Freedom Underground Railroad Experience
Sometime in the early 1850’s, an enslaved Virginian named Richard Newman struck a dangerous and courageous path north to freedom. He began a new life in Blairsville, Pennsylvania with the help of Underground Railroad conductor and African American community leader Lewis Johnson. In those days, a reign of terror permitted white men on their word alone to “claim” any African American as a fugitive slave and take him or her into slavery. Pennsylvania law attempted to thwart this by restricting local police power from aiding slave catchers. In 1858, a deputy United States Marshall and a Uniontown bounty hunter came to Blairsville with a warrant for Richard Newman. Led by Blairsville’s African American community, a howling mob chased them out of town.
On August 18 and 19, 2007, at 2 PM, the Blairsville Passport to Freedom Underground Railroad Experience and Civil War era living historians from around the region will re-enact the Rescue of Richard Newman at the corner of Market and Spring Streets during Blairsville’s Diamond Days festival. This will be their first reenactment as an official program of the NATIONAL PARK SERVICE Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Next year they will kick off the Indiana County Civil War Sesquicentennial at this annual reenactment.
They invite you
to participate in commemorating this important and dramatic Freedom Story.
You will become part of the story as citizens of Blairsville and travelers
via canal, stage and railroad who passed through Blairsville on the way
west. Feel free to dress appropriately if you wish. LOOK FOR THEIR NEWSBOY
FOR THE LATEST NEWS IN 1858.
Mr. Seth Gibson of Blairsville plays Lewis Johnson, Black community leader, Underground Railroad agent, Presbyterian congregant, and coal miner/hauler. As always, funds, sponsors, actors, entertainers, people who sew, committee members and site volunteers for the UGRR museum are needed.
