What follows are regularly issued columns (five a month) with each devoted to organizing Centre County's 1890 population by surname. The source of these columns is primarily a business directory composed of the original 1890 census before it was destroyed by fire.

Each column is also supplemented by a description of entries in Linn's History and Beers' Commemorative Biographical Record as well as any Centre County Library books dealing with a given family.

In celebration of Centre County's 200th birthday on February 13, 2000, the aim was to have a "CentreLine" page for each of the 200 most common surnames appearing in Centre County at the time of the 1860 U.S. Census and the 200 most common surnames appearing on the eve of the new millenium in the Centre County Telephone Directory of 1998-1999.
